7970 3GB or 680 2GB for 1440p

Thread Starter
Hey everyone - I'm gonna be buying a new card alongside a 27'' 1440p monitor. Will 2GB be enough? The 680 seems to be better in some games, but will 2GB be a bottleneck at 1440p? I don't plan on running SLI or Crossfire, this will last me until the next generation of cards - will upgrade in the middle-end of 2014.

In general, at 1440p will either of these cards max out games at 60fps for the next year or so? Or at least 50fps? I found 1600p benchmarks but not many 1440p ones.

7970 I think will be a better choice for your needs.

I have a 3gb 7950 / 1440p and have observed 1-1.75gb usage in most games ( starcraft2/ Mechwarrior online/ crysis 3 ). Only has a heavy modded skyrim push it near 2.5gb.

Of course these are off the top of my head, but if you have a specific game in mind I’ll try it out.

I'll be playing Skyrim. The 680 performs at 20fps higher than the 7970 in 1600p - would it still run better than it if it hits the 2GB cap?

Th GTX 680 is 20 fps higher than the 7970? wth.gif
Do you have any source for that?

I would personnally go with the 7970. Less expensive, on par with the GTX 680 performance, higher overclocking potential and free games included.

Even in the sites that bash AMD they say HD 7970 is the better card. In Skyrim with MOD you need the extra vRam trust me.

Make sure that the bench mark you look at have atleast the 12.11 driver from ATI. It was a radical change in performance for ATI. Also consider that ATI card are sold for less then the nvidia.

Skyrim is a game made around 60fps doesn't it even limit at 60fps? Anyway in most areas both cards will hold steady at 60fps. I upgraded from a 570 gtx for more vram, other then alittle coil whine I'm happy with my 7950 clocked to 1185. Waiting to pick up an extra on the cheap to help push other games 100 fps.

The 7970 would be a better choice. I don't believe you will bottle-neck with most games but like some have said, 2GB will come close in modded Skyrim. The 7970 is the better card when you take everything into consideration mate thumb.gif
