3.0 PCIe is not working? X79 ROG Rampage IV Formula and 2x GTX 680

Hi

So I remember you had to do a registry hack for the X79 chipset in order for NVIDA cards to actually benefit from the 3.0 PCIe instead of 2.0.
I thought that issue was long gone with NVIDIA's newer drivers, but just for the heck of it, I downloaded GPU-Z and it shows 2.0 still.........
"PCI-E 2.0x16 @ x16 2.0". I have the latest bios for my board, and all the latest drivers for it, and for the graphics cards.

TL;DR version: Do you still need to use the Gen3 registry hack from NVIDIA to use 3.0 on this board?

Thanks in advance!

I just did the registry hack from NVIDIA, and it enabled 3.0 x16 on both cards. But still, is really the only way to do it?

Registry hack or patch. The only two ways about it on x79. You really don't pci-E 3.0 for GTX 680s anyways.

It boosts my fps by a good 5-10 fps in most games, so I'd rather have it. thumb.gif

So from 190FPS to 200FPS, ok then. Really it's like 1% difference between the two.

Who said I had that much fps in all my games? And why not squeeze out +1% performance if it's that easy?
I don't understand why you are against the concept.

Sory to barge in but i am about to go with GTX 680 SLI as well on a R4E motherboard is it true that they run as PCI-E 2.0?

Even GTX titans don't need a 3.0 slot to work at full power.

I don't understand why you are against the concept.

What games do you get 10FPS more using pci-E 3.0 vs 2.0? Sounds outrageous to me.

1% FPS out of 100FPS is 1FPS, not a big deal.

If you didn't say 5 - 10 FPS in all my games and just said a nice little boost, I'd have no problem.
