Yeah that's why I ignored the guy in this thread who was like "uhhhh 7970 Lightning? like, duh!" rolleyes.gif

I spotted them on Amazon, but from third party vendors at $700+.

Which 7970s overclock the best? May just save $50 and skip on the GHz editions.

Coming from a 6950 Twin Frozr myself, a 7970 WON'T be quiet in comparison. The 6950 Twin Frozr is silent even under load.

If you wanted it to be about as quiet you'd need to at least invest in an accelero or watercool it. But thats probably not an option. Its surprising that some of the high end non ref heatsinks are actually quite loud (MSI Lightning & Sapphire's higher end cards for example). The standard Sapphire Dual-X, Gigabyte Windforce are good picks. You should look up reviews; I personally found TechPowerUp's noise comparisons actually useful (since they use a passively cooled case. Other review sites make loud fans seem a lot better than they are).

Not to thread-jack, but being in the same vein, how loud are the reference 7950/7970s? I'm debating between getting one of them or a 670 FTW. I currently have an internal exhaust (TFII) card in my Node and it requires my radiator fans to spin near max just to exhaust all the extra heat, so I'm going for a reference board.

I've heard the EVGA is actually very quiet for a blower up until ~65% fan, but damn, that Never Settle bundle is tempting.

Also, not being an AMD afficionado, can someone explain to me the difference between these two cards?

Both are reference 7950 Boosts, no?

yeah i dunno the exact difference, get the cheaper one.

Also they are relatively quiet up until about 50% fan speed or so and then get very much louder on up from there. But I don't imagine for most moderate gaming that they will kick up that high if left at auto settings
