Friend is building a computer, I want to run it through with you guys.

So my friend wants to build his computer, and I suggested some alternatives, but this is his list. I want a deeper insight from much more knowledgeable people than me, let me know what you guys think. I suggested to him to get a NVIDIA 660 or 670, instead of the radeon HD 7970 and a different motherboard. What do you guys think?

ASUS Sabertooth Z77 Intel Series 7 - Motherboard

Intel Core i7-3770K Quad Core - CPU

Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler

Corsair Vengeance 8GB (DDR3 1600 MHz) - RAM

XFX Radeon HD 7970 (3GB) - Video Card

Western Digital Blue 1TB (7200 RPM, 64MB Cache) - Hard Drive

Cooler Master HAF 922M Mid Tower - Tower

OCZ ModXStream Pro 700 Watt - Power Supply

He could pick a different motherboard like the AsusP8z77 pro v or the gigabyte z77-UDH3 , the sabertooth is extremely overpriced and noisy , yes , noisy! Well if the rig is for gaming he'll be fine with an i5-3570k , PSU is overkill , he could go with any decent 550W or 600W , i'd advise he puts the money he saves from the mobo and PSU to an SSD and maybe a different GPU , like the 670 or the 7950 thumb.gif

I'm guessing these parts might be a best fit for his budget but the

Western Digital Blue 1TB (7200 RPM, 64MB Cache) - Hard Drive

isn't going to be anything special performance-wise. I would really try for a WD Black, or Hybrid drive assuming you ruled out SSD due to price/space.

He does want to add an SSD.

Go with a 7950 if he is going on 1080p and only go 7970 or a 680 for 1440-1600p
And not being a fanboi here but the nvidia series are overpriced compared to the 7900 series. My 7950 is over clocked to 1200mhz which is the same performance of a gtx 680-7970.
BTW here is the general performance of those cards 7970 GHz >gtx 680 >7970>gtx 670> 7950>gtx 660ti

Also The AMD cards overclock further than most nvidia cards due to the voltages. Even though amd has their voltage locked they offer a larger overclock room than the nvidia cards.
Hope my suggestions help you and your friend out

Don't get a sabertooth. Another ASUS or Gigabyte board a little cheaper will be perfectly fine. ASUS charges you an extra $100 for the shield on the Sabertooth. I would stick with the 3770k for future proof gaming (Do you guys live near a microcenter?) I guess the cooler is good for a start, but he will probably want to upgrade in a couple months. It will be fine for the time being though. Corsair Vengeance is over-rated and they use crappy chips in the later versions (I own the same RAM. Going to switch it out soon). Get some G.Skill DDR3 1600 RAM. For the video card I would not get an Nvidia. He will get more performace out of a 7950/7970 at a much lower price. I would get an MSI TFIII 7950 and then get another one to crossfire soon. Don't put an HDD in the build. It will be the slowest part of the system. I will NEVER have an HDD in my system every again after having mine. I now have three 120GB SSD's in my system. Get an SSD. Kingston HyperX is a great SSD. Or a samsung 840. Case is good. I would get an 850w PSU so he can have room to crossfire. Make sure it comes with four 6pin/8pin connectors.

I guess the most important question is this: Do you live near a microcenter? Where do you live?

1- No need for the saberrooth. Overpriced and nothing special but a shield. Get the ud3h from gigabyte save 100usd.
2- if he intend to overclock. Change that cooler to noctua nh-d14 or phantec ph12 if he wants air . Swiftech 220 or h100i if he wants clc
3- STAY AWAY FROM XFX and I mean it. Thwy aren't how good they used to be. Get msi gigabyte or sapphire.
4- plan to sli? If not ditch that psu and get a 600w roswill capstone or seasonic m12ii 620 half modular l.
5- case is a bit old. There are better cases now. I dont say the haf is bad. It's just kinda dated.

Good luck

7970 - Don't sweat it. Faster than 670 and costs about the same
Sabertooth - Is he going for crazy clocks? Even so i would rather have the MVE for crazy clocks. If not a GB Z77X-UD3H. I don't think he is going for crazy clocks choosing that overrated cooler,

i7-3770k, Gaming build? If it is don't bother with it. 3570k if gaming build
XFX 7970 - A disaster! Don't buy that one. You won't be surprised why you would not like AMD if you bought a XFX. Buy a Sapphire if not going underwater eventually
If you are a reference Visiontek/HIS/Sapphire/Powercolor will do
For such a build i would really really have a SSD inside it.

CM HAF 922, any specific preferences? I would rather have a Define R4 at the price of a 922
Pick your poison (there are also window versions for no extra money at least for the black)

700W is TOO MUCH.
Rosewill Capstone 450W is good enough if not going CF later

And yeah, don't get a vengeance. It's awful for OC'ing now. If you are going for a G.Skill get this because 1600 is the same price
