E3000 Router Cooling Mod + Pics

Happened to go into my routers webpage today and noticed that the CPU usage was hitting over 240% (100% load plus a good sized queue). Decided it was time to upgrade the cooling and overclock it. So far I have only upgraded the cooling. Hopefully I have time later this weekend to overclock it. (Sorry about the image quality. Didn't have a real camera with me)

Didn't have a spare 12v power supply for the fan, but decided to try running it on usb.

That failed with the Intel fan. After some digging I found another one to try.

It worked....barely.

If you didn't notice the paper moving there, that's because it barely moved. Here's a close up of the fan, it is old, dirty, but spins.

Next problem. Couldn't find a screw driver to fit...decided to drill the screws out.

Tested to make sure everything was still working.

After a bit of prying I got in.

Now to modify the heat sink so it would fit around all the other components.

Now that I had massive piles of aluminum shavings all over, it was time to take the heat sink off the CPU. Was pretty sure I was going to kill my router here. It took a lot of prying to get the heat sink to let go.

After a bit of cleaning, it was ready for a new heat sink.

Tried a bit a thermal paste to see how much was needed.

Decided to go with a bit more thermal paste.

Used some zip ties to hold everything together while I tied everything down...

..with pink string. Then used tape and pens to tighten it up.

Here's the final product. Now to test and see if I broke it.

Works perfect. Now it just needs a good overclock and it can get put away and ignored.

Overclock results

Download speeds are based off the best results of 5 speed test runs, using a vpn.
Speed test results without a vpn are 24.61 Mbit/s download, 9.93 Mbit/s upload, and 14 ms ping.

CPU Frequency - Memory Frequency - Bus Frequency - Max Download (Mbits/s) - Max Upload (Mbits/s) - Best Ping (ms)

480 (stock) - 240 (stock) - 120 (stock) - 8.48 - 7.18 - 31
500 - 260 - 130 - 9.65 - 7.49 - 28
520 - 260 - 130 - 9.25 - 7.44 - 55
540 - 260 - 130 - 9.84 - 7.76 - 27
560 - 260 - 130 - 9.56 - 7.98 - 28

640 - 266 - 133 - 9.48 - 7.90 - 40
660 - 266 - 133 - 9.28 - 7.99 - 44
665 - 266 - 133 - 9.31 - 8.25 - 16

Been running at 665 MHz for about 8 hours now without any problems. Router is reading CPU usage as about 140% - 180% when under heavy use.

Not sure the speed test results show anything very useful, but I am noticing throughput is about 100 KB/s higher than before.

Unfortunately I have not found any way to determine the temperature of the components, but the router seems to be running cooler than before. I guess I will just hope the CPU is also running cool. If anyone knows how to check the temperature of the CPU, please let me know. Currently running Tomato Firmware v1.28.9054 MIPSR2-beta E3000 USB vpn3.6

What do you have going on in your home network that your router was so taxed and over 100% all the time?

Running OpenVPN on the router. Most of the load is from it having to encrypt and decrypt all the traffic going through it.
