Xeon E3-1220v2 idle temp concerns

Thread Starter
Just finished a little NAS build using an Intel Xeon E3-1220v2 processor. Nothing is overclocked, (obvious impossibility with this processor) and I am running the stock heatsink. I am concerned because my BIOS indicates the idle temp is 44C.

Is that really high or is it just me?

Also, am I retarded or does Intel just not publish any temp specs for this processor?

That is odd that Intel didn't put its T-Case spec on the ARK for that E3-1220v2. The closest analog to that chip is the Core i5-3450 (same speed + core count, different cache and IGP), and its only temp spec is T-Case @ 67.4°C

Here is the result of some sysctl commands issued when no load was on the machine:
Code:
[root@freenas ~]# sysctl -a|grep ".*dev\.cpu\.[0-9]\.coretemp.*"
dev.cpu.0.coretemp.delta: 54

[root@freenas ~]# sysctl -a|grep ".*dev\.cpu.[0-9].temperature.*"
dev.cpu.0.temperature: 52.0C
dev.cpu.1.temperature: 49.0C
dev.cpu.2.temperature: 53.0C
dev.cpu.3.temperature: 47.0C

Is it possible these cpu temperatures are referring to their respective tjmax specifications and not tcase?

I really don't want to fry my new processor, but right now I'm afraid to put it under real load.

If I remember correctly, Intel chips report their temps as delta (i.e. difference) of TJ-Max. The temps in your first "code box" (as calclated by TJMax - Delta) are 51C, 51C, 50C, and 46C. That matches up nicely with the temps in the second "code box", as they can fluctuate over the time frame of mere seconds.

They do seem a bit high for idle temps, however. You might want to check if the HSF is firmly attached, properly ventilated, etc.

I actually did that last night before I posted... just to make sure. The heat sink is definitely mounted correctly, using Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound.
