Help needed!!Corsair Power supply noise!!

Hi All,

I own the Corsair TX850 v2 power supply,it's only a couple of hours old and has this high frequency(squeaking) sound coming from it:sadsmiley. It's not the fan, as i took the power supply out of the case. How can i check(using software) if whether the power supply is still working properly, because i seriously don't want to return it for another one(It's going to take a while before i get another one).Could somebody please help me as this sound is really annoying. It happens all the time even when I'm browsing webpages. It starts as soon as i turn the computer on.The computer is now not under load as i only have the motherboard, psu, ram, hdd connected.

Any help will be highly appreciated!

Many Thanks in advance:thumb:

That's most likely coil whine. Coil whine is caused by electromagnetic resonance inside the PSU itself, and doesn't indicate an actual hardware failure. It's annoying as hell, however.

You could always return it saying you don't like it, and buy a different power supply. If you tell them its because of coil whine you probably won't get a return.

Yes it is the coil whine!I stopped the fan from moving and checked with my ear then found it is indeed the coil that's making the noise!Isn't there a way of reducing this or stopping it. sad-smiley-002.gif i can't work on my computer with this sound.

Not without cracking it open. And I don't recommend that, for obvious reasons. I hate to say it, but you're going to have to return it.

And don't worry, no reputable retailer or manufacturer would refuse an RMA due to coil whine of that magnitude.

Same here, just had two Silverstone Strider Plus 850w's and they make a very high pitched buzz under any 3d load, while my Silverstone Decathlon 850w is perfectly silent on the same system. I would definitely catapult that loud psu back to where it was purchased from, especially if it makes any noise while in the desktop. If you purchased the power supply from a retailer like newegg they will return/refund it.

I hate to sound round but, are you kidding me?
You don't need a reason to return a product, I'm not sure how old you are or what stores you shop at but, if you are under the return policy you simply take it back to where you bought it and if they say "is there something wrong with it" or "why do you want to return it" you can simply say "I don't want it"

Stores don't have the right to refuse returns. That's why its a "XX day return policy" not "Returns only allowed if defective" policy.

Please don't give people false information. This fellow could be honest and tell them he's returning it because of coil whine and they have to refund him. If they say to contact the manufacturer he can be rude and say, well first refund me, then you call the manufacturer.

I actually received a SP850-m by thermaltake and same issue.. coil whine, but when under load 100% cpu theres no coil whine. However, since I'm not a fan of noisy power supplies. I'll be returning mine tomorrow at the store "because I don't want it" thumb.gif

edit -
Simpler way to put is,
Returns are for people who don't want what they bought or wish to exchange
RMA is for faulty/defective/damaged equipment
Either way if you bought it from a store and your under the return policy you don't have to be the one to RMA it wink.gif
