8350 Overclock slower FPS

Thread Starter
I wasn't sure whether to post here or in the MB section so I am starting here.

I upgraded to a 8350 Vishear several weeks back and was running it on an MSI890FXA-GD70 board. It overclocked easily to 4.7 at 1.4 volts. However, it was difficult to cold boot the machine. Often times I would have to turn the on/off switch8-10 times to boot. So I decided to upgrade the MB and purchased the new ASRock Extreme9.

I now have no boot problems and have the 8350 overclocked and stable at 4.8 with just the multiplier. However, my FPS have dropped dramatically in all games with the new MB. For example, I am now getting 30-35 in RO2 where previously it was 62. Similar drops occur in BF3.

There seems to be a signficant bottleneck somewhere with this board.

Here are my system specs

8350 - oc to 4.8 on 1.4 volts
geil ram - using XM1 profile at 1866
Extreme9 990fx - running latest bios
Dual HD 6980 running in crossfire
Cooler Master Gold Power Supply 1000 watts

One additional piece of information. To avoid a complete windows 7 reinstall I used the sysprep.exe command which worked with no problems.

Thanks,

StratDoc

How have you tested stability? Sounds to me like it's not 100% stable.

But how? Did you run Prime95 or another stability test for at least 10 hours?

I'm going to guess it's throttling due to heat, what kind of cooling are you using? Good airflow over the vrms?

I am using a coarsair H80i. Temps under full load never exceed 56 celcius. I tested stability with Intel Burntest - 20 passes on extreme ram.

Are you overclocking it in bios or using software? Changing the multiplier with software can give some odd results with my vishera rigs.

Hello,

the first days i got my fx-8320, i have tried some overclocks on it. When @ 4.6-4.7 , in bf3 multiplayer, i had huge fps drops like you ( no heat problem) , @ 4.5 , its stable , and the game runs well.

Maybe just overclock it @ 4.5 and play 30 min on bf3 and take a look at fps. Maybe you need more voltage , or maybe its the limit of the cpu.

I agree with rocket sounds like you need a little more voltage...
had the same thing happen with my 6300, hw monitor while running bf3 highlighted the massive v droop I was getting.

and also cssorkinman also makes a great point of software vs bios for OCing... its also been shown by my experience that software can cause
some weird issues with vishera chips.

Thanks all. I did as suggested a rolled the OC back from 4.8 to 4.7 and upped the voltage to 1.3875. Ran Prime95 overnight with no errors and fps in games this morning is back to normal.

One additional question. My ram is DDR3 1600 with the profile specs at 1866. Any real benefit or detriment to forcing it to run at 1866? The reason I ask is that the extreme9 says it does not support 1866, yet everything seems to run fine at that speed. The FSB:DRAM ratio at 1866 is high 3:14 but don't know why that would matter.

Thanks again,

Robert
