In the minority of the games the difference was 5 to 10 % at most.
Only in Lost Planet 2 official benchmark the difference was up to 50 % in favor of 16 Gb RAM!

Conclusion: 8 Gb are sure enough, i just think Lost Planet 2 was somehow unoptimized. I was testing these games with a Core i7 3820 overclocked to 4550 MHz and GTX670 4 Gb.

my vote if you want to upgrade now then the amd fx 8350 is a very good performer and overclocks like a mad man and did I mention is not the horror story most lead you to believe mainly the intel fanboys when infact amd fx 8350 competes very well with many of the mainstream gaming intel cpu's like the I5 and in some cases the I7 also if you buy a board for the amd fx 8350 with a good quality for instance asus sabertooth 990fx r2.0 the steamroller will fit in that board.

http://valid.canardpc.com/2776603 is of my overclock (24/7 100% stable ) with a full 4x 4gb set of 1866mhz ram running full speed @1866mhz on 1t the amd fx 8350 is a very good performer for the price and it flys thru anything I throw at it with ease. The amd fx 8350 is as I said a good performer for a low price.

I also would like to point out I prefer amd due to facts amd didn't do dirty business dealings and try to monopolize the market like intel if it wasn't from amd intel would be 3x the price and with intels dirty business dealings has held back the technology market for us pc users if you do not believe in this look into it the federal government had to step in to correct this due to what intel had been doing since the early 90's http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2010/08/intel.shtm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMD_v._Intel for information there were around 5 major lawsuits filed by multiple companies not just AMD for starters IBM / NVidia and many more explain why sli was removed from support with amd cpu's it was proven intel had a hand in it.

I say this to point out why I go for amd not to start a issue but to state facts and my reasoning behind it.

anti competition raises prices and stagnates performance increases on hardware like CPU's / GPU's / motherboards and so on. Intel made it common practice to try to shutdown competition.

These not even taking into affect the dirty intel compiler (biased cpu dispatcher ) thing look into http://www.agner.org/optimize/blog/read.php?i=49#49 it amds cpu's were purposely made to look like they performed worse than intel due to intel got a good compiler if intel cpu was detected and amd got a dirty compiler if amd was detected perfect example cinebench a few years back got sued over this.

I want to point out this is all coming from someone that used to be a hardcore Intel fanboy but after I found out about Intels dirty business practices I converted to amd. I just simply do not like shady business I will sum it up like this would you buy from a shady car dealer trying to sell you a Ferrari and not being able to tell you anything with a straight face. I know I would not buy it Intel has been doing this for years bad enough the federal government stepped in and many companies around world filed lawsuits on Intel along with many companies were sued for being in cahoots with them and these shady business practices.

Dude save it for the soapbox in the amd forums. No one cares about intels shady business practices. That's how ALL corporations work. You use windows don't you? Well bill gates ripped that off of Steve jobs and apple in the 80s.

well I just want to point out you just gave a perfect example of what I was trying to say I do not condone the fact of how Bill Gates went about it but it did bring in competition and encouraged innovation what Intel has done and has been doing shuts down innovation and holds back the progression of technology in the pc market with a strong competition come more innovation period so the dirty business tactics ( trying to MONOPOLISE) Intel has used are very counter productive for anyone but Intel and us the consumers feel the strain it causes do you not see this. I also want to say that when there is un even competition due to stuff like Intel has done the products we receive are far inferior compared to if proper competition was allowed this is why the Federal Government stepped in to try to set this right.

The Federal Government would not have stepped in unless it was obvious these tactics were being applied by Intel nor would many companies from around world be filing lawsuits against Intel over this exact practice.

Another vote for sitting on the 960 for a while more.
At LEAST until Haswell.

Its still a beast for gaming and everyday applications and there is little reason to spend the money on an upgrade unless your system isnt giving you the performance you want.

I would also like to point out the future is not looking at single threaded programing but more towards multithreaded software / games this is where the amd fx 8350 shines.

You shouldn't buy what 'might' be good in future, buy what is good now.

he was simply asking about an upgrade route I laid out a legit upgrade route no where in his post did he specify Intel so I am not trolling just supplying a good suggestion and reasoning behind it.

I will put it like this the 8350 will perform perfectly fine for gaming and will easily keep you in the good fps range on almost any game if not then overclock it and I quarantee it will for 1/2 the price of equivalent Intel rig and you still have room to upgrade to next gen CPU the steamroller. I play all my games maxxed out with ease on 3x hd 7970 gpu's with nearly no bottlenecking at all at 4.8ghz x8 my main rig. I only use for gaming (the one in my sig ) and nothing else and trust me it flies at any game I set it at. I have yet to find a game unplayable or under playable framrate so if you want to pay the premium for an overpriced Intel rig have at it and waste the extra cash that you could invest into ssd / another graphics card and so on.

I also want to point out from here forward games will be oriented more towards the new AMD architecture due to AMD winning the contracts on nearly all the consoles and they will be running the jaquar core cpu a 8core AMD ( similar to AMD fx cpu's but downclocked) this meens games will be more geared towards AMD also these are also powered by AMD graphics lol in the area of a AMD ati radeon HD 7000 series GPU / APU this is for xbox720 / ps4 and likely steam piston and many more so next gen games will be designed around AMD architecture along with be dx11 standard not a dx9 console ported over to dx11 like it has been in past.

I see the above information giving AMD a huge leap forward in advancement (by meens of added funds for R&D ) also from a programing standpoint an edge in games being better coded for AMD is a huge benefit to AMD CPU's/GPU's/APU's period and removes a lot of biased compilers now in a lot of the games out leaning towards Intel.

I want to point out almost all games are first designed around console then ported over to pc as of lately and in past this will no longer hamper the outcome once the newwer games are being made on the new consoles the pc will see a huge leap forward in the graphics field along with a lot better games period (aka less buggy ) and games will no longer be designed around a console version of 30fps dx9 then bumped up to dx11 at 60+ fps what this meens is a lot for us the gamers and it is a huge leap forward for AMD in many ways.

this is a very good example of what you get gaming wise for the added cost Amd fx 8350 stock vs I7 3770k stock http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewrPDqFuT3Y&feature=player_embedded so I see the increase is only on average 2-6 fps for an added $150-$300 or more to go Intel I7 3770k another very good example of the AMD fx 8350's gaming performance almost on par with the I7 3770k.

Intel cpu + motherboard
http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-SABERTOOTH-Z77-Intel-Motherboard/dp/B007RIFKUS/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1366731691&sr=1-1&keywords=sabertooth+z77
http://www.amazon.com/Intel-i7-3770K-Quad-Core-Processor-Cache/dp/B007SZ0EOW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1366731724&sr=8-1&keywords=i7+3770k

AMD cpu + motherboard
http://www.amazon.com/AMD-FX-Series-Eight-Core-Processor-FD8350FRHKBOX/dp/B009O7YUF6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1366731740&sr=8-1&keywords=amd+fx+8350
http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-SABERTOOTH-990FX-R2-0-Motherboard/dp/B008YDJHWM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1366731755&sr=8-1&keywords=asus+sabertooth+990fx+r2.0

remember these are nearly identical but one is Intel other is AMD the added cost just cpu + motherboard is $188.72 for Intel which is a good set of ram or an ssd and almost 1/2 of a top end GPU for a loss of 2-6fps by going AMD you can easily get a better GPU to compensate or have a good chunk of the money to invest in a second GPU to sli / crossfire with and don't listen to people telling you the AMD will bottleneck the GPU's in sli / crossfire that is BS this has been proven time and time again it will perform a very small percentage less by going AMD usualy in the low single digits less.

I want to point out by single digits I am referring to 1-5% less performance total by going AMD for SLI / Crossfire. I see a loss of mayber 5-10 total fps loss on average with my trifire 7970s vs using a Intel to drive them for a savings of $188.72 . I can live with a total loss in crossfire of 5-10 fps when I never dip below 100 fps on any game I play including crysis 3 maxxed out and farcry 3 maxxed out and many other including the horrible Guild wars 2 in huge zergs in WVWVW I never dip under 75fps while I constantly listen to people even with I7 builds complaining about single digit fps in Guild wars under extreme mass zergs fights. I do not have an issue and play thru it like a hot knife thru butter with above 75fps solid.
