FX-8120 @4.2 Ghz on air... - Page 2

Thanks for the advice regarding XSPC kits. Unquestionably worth the extra $50 - $60 over any Corsair H80i/H90/H100i or other cooling kit for that matter. Temp difference is quite noticeable. Looking at different XSPC kits to determine the best fit for my Antec 1200 case. Triple fan kit should work as a top-mount option.

Having said that, since my new choice of cooling will be more expensive, I cannot upgrade the FX-8120 at the same time. Therefore, I decided to return my FX-8120 use the store credit and upgrade to the FX-8320 Vishera for $16. I will upgrade to an XSPC kit at a later time and keep my current air cooler. That seems to be the wiser decision upgrade wise... Would you guys agree?

Thanks! biggrin.gif

yes it does, Bulldozer (being a debut architecture) had a few bugs to that needed to be ironed out. Those bugs really gave it unimpressive performance numbers.

Vishera addresses those bugs, so you are making good choice.

Yea, had similar issues oc'ing my 8120 as well (though it's my board mostly) - instead of dropping cash on other parts (mobo, better cooler, etc.) I just dropped the cash on an 8350 and the stock performance is worlds better then my overclocked 8120 @ 4ghz.

What motherboard do you have and what exactly are the signs that it is your mobo hitting limits, rather than any other component. I am def. switching to the Vishera option, thanks for the heads-up, too.

Asrock 970 Extreme 3 (first version, not the revision) - Had throttling under heavy loads with minor overclocks. Your board should be quite a bit better then it, afaik.

I've currently got my rig on 4.2GHz but i know i can get it easily to around 4.4-4.5 GHz easily on the CM Hyper 212 EVO. I just adjusted my multiplier and voltage until it was stable and it all seems fine! biggrin.gif

Now I am thinking I should reconsider different air cooling. I have the CM V6GT, but I keep hearing about how much better the CM Hyper 212, Noctua and Zalman coolers are. Really surprised me, since the EVO is only $33 and I paid $60 for mine
