660 or 7870?

Thread Starter
Hello everyone, I'm Adam (apple jokes are coming) and I'm new to oveclock.net (kinda, never really posted anything, just looked stuff up). For some reason I can't start a new thread in forum topics, because the start new thread button doesn't appear. IF someone could tell me what to do, it would be appreciated :>

If you don't mind, I'll post my question here, just in case someone feels like answering it : P

I have £200 and I need a new GPU, I'm thinking of either buying a GTX660 (non-ti) or a 7870. Now I know the 7870 is better, but the price difference is pretty big, and I have other places the money could go to.. (totally not a cheap hooker)

GTX 660: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-msi-gtx-660-twin-frozr-iii-oc-28nm-pcie-30-(x16)-6008mhz-gddr5-gpu-1033mhz-boost-1098mhz-cores-9

R7870: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-asus-radeon-hd-7870-directcu-ii-v2-28nm-4800mhz-gddr5-gpu-1000mhz-1280-cores-hdmi-2x-dvi-display

I'm not gonna buy a cheaper version of the 7870 because I want a good cooler.

660 - £157
7870 - £193

So there's a £36 difference, and I saw some game benchmarks, showing that their performance in games is very close, so I'm not so sure if it's worth it to spend the extra £40 quid on 10 more fps when the game is more than playable anyway.

Here is the video I saw the benchmarks in:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOXMYVEmpEg

I know the memory bus of the 660 is kinda low, but is that really gonna affect anything? I also heard that the 660 is not so good with AA, but I'm not the kinda guy who likes it at x16, I can do with x4 or even without, jaggies were never much of a problem for me (maybe because of my crappy eyes tongue.gif).

So the question is: Is it worth spending the extra 40 quid on the 7870 over the 660 when I also need other things (a headset for example).
I game on a single 1080p monitor.

Thanks beforehand, Adam

Change your thread title... And as far as the 660 goes, once overclocked, beats a 7950. Either is really a good choice. Personally, in this case, for less, go for the 660. Card is a monster. The memory bus won't be a problem either.

What are you seriuos. Show me where a 660 beats a 7950 anywhere, overclocked or not it won't come close. Your thinking of the 660ti.

Get the 7870, due to the fact you'll get a 256 bus over the 192 bus also the game bundle that comes with it is more than the difference in cost.

The game bundles ran out now, so that's not a factor. I played bioshock through now anyway and I'm not interested in Tomb Raider.

I would still get the 7870, it's a more solid card and overclocks well. Here are some benches on the two, make your choice how you see fit.

660 can trade blows with the 7870 depending on the game, but overall the 7870 is better IMO.
Plus there's the Tahiti LE variant (7930 essentially), which sell for close to the same price here as the GHz Edition (not sure about UK pricing).
