Does my NetBook support SataII or SataIII?

Thread Starter
How can i make sure what sata revision my netbook supports without disasembling it? I run AIDA64 and under Chipset I checked SouthBridge infomation. It shows as Intel Panther HM70. Google gives me this.

http://ark.intel.com/products/67419/Intel-BD82HM70-PCH

From that It seems it supports 4 sata slots in total, and one slot can be sata 3. But how can i know for certain that my netbook does operate on a sata III port?

And why does it matter?

II and III are basically the same when it comes to Mech drives, and if you are looking to put an SSD in it you wont see a difference between the two either.

Sata 3 drives will work in sata 2 ports, but run at sata 2 speeds. You can also run sata 2 drives in sata 3 ports. For a mech drive I would not worry about what sata version it runs, I haven't ever noticed a difference between them. For a ssd I would get sata 3 I case I want to ever use it in a different computer.

Guess I didn't really answer your question. Best way to km now would look up the specs for your model of netbook. The chip set may support 4 data ports, but there won't be 4 in a netbook. The manufacturer will have done some customization and decided what they actually want to include.

CPU-z will tell you what chipset you have. the short answer is like every one else said it won't matter, regardless I hope i the information about the chipset through CPU-z helps.

Hi guys thanx for your answers. To answer some of your questions.

My NetBook is the Acer Aspire One 756, but on the specification page it does not list what revision the sata slot is. It only shows what drive capacity it comes with.

http://panam.acer.com/acerpanam/netbook/2012/Acer/Aspire/AspireOneAO756/AspireOneAO756sp2.shtml

Why do you say it wont matter even with SSD? This machine comes with 500GB HDD, but i'm thinking of changing it with a a 128 or 256GB SSD, and one of the higher end models, like Vertex 4 or Samsung 840. I already own an Vertex 3 for my Desktop computer, and CrystaMark Benchmarks show speeds of 550/500 Read/Write, so i dont get why it doesnt matter that these speeds are going to get reduced in half with a sata 2 port.

Also i run cpu-z but it doesnt give me any indication as to what might be. Is there any specific part i should look for there? I checked all the tabs, but mostly its about cpu and memories.

Even the Service Manual doesn't say which SATA versions it supports, only that the HDDs it can come with are SATA-II (3Gb/s) drives. Of course this proves nothing, for all we know Acer may have decided to use a SATA-II HDD model solely for cost reasons.

However, a customer review of a HGST 7mm HDD states as such:

On my ao756, I saw about a 12% speed improvement compared to the stock, single platter, 320 gb SATA II Seagate. This was NOT, however, reflected in the WEI or Windows Experience Index test that Microsoft offers in the Windows 7 Control Panel. In contrast, when I dropped an SSD into the ao756 the WEI shot up from 5.9 to 7.4."

Hmm, thanx for that. Based on that comment review it seems like it is SATA3, But ACER makes different versions of these computers so i'm still not sure. For example some say the wireless adapter offers bluetooth, but for some reason mine doesnt seem to have so i pruchased an external dongle for this task.

Surely isnt there any diagnostic doftware that can tell this kind of information?

One thing to check before you get a new drive is the thickness supported. On my netbook you could only use 7mm drives. Standard is 9.5mm.
To be honest I don't think getting a high end drive for a netbook is even worth it. When I used an ssd with mine it was still quite slow, load times for programs were only marginally improved. I ended up taking the ssd out and just getting a tiny USB for ready boost. It is almost as good as the ssd.
