Crossfire 7870 Tahiti LE cards or get a single 7970 card?

Thread Starter
Ive had my powercolor 7870 myst edition (tahiti le card) for just over a week and im already thinking of getting another one just so i can cross fire it.

But if i get another card i would have spent about $400ish-450 (assuming i find the card for $230 or less or $209 again to be specific). So with that, how are the performance of 2 7870 LE cards as suppose to just 1 7970?

I see many 7970 cards for under $450, my local microcenter has the powercolor 7970 for $399.

7970.

Hopefully you don't have any problems with your 7870XT. Cause if you do, they only get worse in crossfire.

Better in the long run (especially if you ever upgrade monitor), better later when you can do a cheap CFX, won't be a jet engine and will be cooler than 7870 CFX.

A single 7870XT also draws more power than a 7970.

Woulda gotten the XT over the myst edition if it was available or had a better deal on them. Powercolor tahiti card isnt bad imo, just gets loud.

I understand crossfire/sli cards can cause stability issues but ive read the 7870 LE cards are "broken" 7950 cards... soo wouldnt 2 of them be triumph over a single 7970?

In terms of absolute framerate, yes, by far.

In terms of potential microstutter and a whole slew of problems due to the fact that the 7870 LE is an unsupported card with no reference design...

If you can solve your needs with a single card buy a single card do not go Crossfire/SLI unless you have to

I am using 2560x1440 and at that res no single card out there can max out some of the most demanding games so i have been force to go GTX 680 SLI

that diamond HD 7970 is one of the best reference designs. you should be able to run at 1100 mhz at stock volts and even higher with voltage tweaking. the cooler can get a bit loud with voltage overclocking to 1200 mhz.

if you want a custom cooler design go for sapphire HD 7970 OC. custom PCB. so no full cover waterblocks. good dual x cooler.

with the recent reviews showing terrible problems with crossfire I wouldn't invest in two AMD cards until the problem is fixed. Nobody knows how long it will take.

One AMD card is problem free so go with the single 7970.
