Will Sandy/Ivy ever become insufficient?

Thread Starter
I used to own a intel dual core e7400, then upgraded to an i7 920 which was the bees knees. Ive gone from 2500k to 2700k to 3770k. Got me thinking, will these cpus ever become insufficient for gaming? I just cant see a time when these cpus wont be enough to keep up with games and gpus alike.

What do you think? Just seems like theres no need to look forward to haswell/broadwell/skylake unless you just want the latest thing?

The same could have been said about CPUs released back in 2005 and 2006. The CPUs from then aren't going to do well in many modern games, so I'm sure that at some point within the next three to four years the current CPUs will be insufficient. However, if many of the ported games from the PS4/XBOX make better use of multi-threading and the x86 architecture we may get more life from our current CPUs. I don't see the current Sandy, Ivy and Haswell chips being sufficient past five years from now.

Depends on what you use your PC for. They ought to last until when/if HSA catches on. Another thing to consider is DDR4 (Intel Skylake).

Personally I wouldn't go from i7-920 to i5-2500k. To i7-2700k and then i7-3770k also seems like a waste.

It should be sufficient for the next five years. Anything past that time horizon is inherently unpredictable.
