[Build Log] Project: Dashie

Summary
So, I've been looking to downsize for when I finally move into my dorm room in college. My old rig was very big and the space wasn't efficiently used, so I sold it and am using the money to build this 'downsized' (physically) premium college budget rig. The needs for this rig are as follows: fast (indefinably OC'able), small (the prodigy should be wonderful), upgradable (AMD APU Series?), and cool (power efficient and cool, physically).

Now, I have a history (mostly madness really) of overclocking CPU's, I've OC'ed a AMD FX-4100 to 6.9GHz on air cooling using the Thermaltake Frio [Selling this, pm me if you want it].... (Proof here).... I recently built a AMD A10 APU rig for a friend, and I quite liked it a lot. So, as a result, I'm going to go AMD APU A-10 Series for this build.

Current Build Status:
Stage 4/5

So finally I decided to undertake the project without losing any of my computers awesomeness. I am going into a Bitfenix Prodigy so this should be fun. Here is a list of the part being used:
Parts List:
Back-ordered (Waiting for shipment to be sent)~~Awaiting Delivery~~Pending Install (Possibly waiting on other components)~~Installed
  • AMD A10-5800K 3.8GHz Quad-Core (Looking to push upwards of 4.5GHz)
  • Cooler Master GeminII S525 CPU Cooler
  • ASRock FM2A85X-ITX Mini ITX FM2
  • Patriot Viper 3 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-2133
  • Corsair CX Series CX500 500W ATX 12V 80 Plus Bronze Power Supply
  • SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 6970 2GB 256-bit GDDR5
  • BitFenix Prodigy (White) Mini ITX Tower
  • Asus BW-12B1ST/BLK/G/AS Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Writer
  • SanDisk 128GB SATA3 6GB/s SSD
  • 3x 3TB Western Digital Drives (7,200 RPM)
  • 5M RGB-LED Strip (300 LED's per meter)

Tracking Links:

Planned Customization's:
  • A custom interior lighting system using some 300LED/m strip I got to light the inside... Pics below!
  • A "outlet" for a rear ardunio mounted micro-controller (the ardunio will be mounted facing the outside of the case in the back or even top, and where the headers are, there will be small slits cut into the case so I can plug wires into the back, allowing me to interface with physical objects and creating all sorts of cool projects.
  • Lazer engraving/milling (CNC) a custom OC onto the front using my schools tool/tech lab.... We have a 40w lazer cutter that can cut and/or engrave pretty much anything you can think of plus we have 2 amazing CNC mills that are accurate up to the thousandths (1/1000th of an inch) biggrin.gif
  • Water cooling it, not sure weather I should just stick to a corsair h100 or something similar

Component's Images:
Quote:
RGB LED Strips. They can achieve somewhere in the ballpark of 1 million colors. I'm going to use the planned-to-be-integrated ardunio and a couple of transistors to control the color/brightness/intensity of these strips. I will also custom make a connector so I can connect more of these if I want to. The strip will feed off of the PC's 12v line and be controlled by the ardunio. It will be able to cycle through colors, change based on the PC's internal temperatures, and also have beat detection for when I'm listening to music.

Can you tell me some of the reasons why you didn't use an intel CPU? Also is that a Sandisk Extreme 120gb or just Sandisk. BTW I have a Sandisk Extreme 120gb and it's REALLY fast and quite cheap!

you don't need an Intel CPU for everything.

and all SSD's are fast, some faster than others yes, but all are still fast nonetheless.

I don't. Too big, and not counting custom cases probably accounts for 9/10 of all the "SFF" builds here. tongue.gif

Maybe not for actual MHz, but Intel CPUs are quite overclockable and arguably are faster (I see a gaming graphics card so assuming gaming). Also, Intel CPUs are more power efficient.

While socket 939, AM2 and AM3 enjoyed quite long life spans, I'm not so sure about socket FM2 as it had quickly replaced the short-lived FM1.

Moot issue as parts have been ordered/shipped/received.

I must agree with you on this one, however AMD's A-Series processors do have a better idle power consumption than most, if not all Intel processors do in this class. Now, I'm not exactly looking for the highest efficiency CPU, however, the price point of this CPU+GPU (APU) processors caught my eye. Having a built in decent graphics card is always a plus, even if you don't use it 99% of the time, however it will come in handy when transitioning from one dedicated graphics card to another.

The FM2 socket has plans for processors to be released in both 2013 and 2014 code-named 'Richland', so I wouldn't worry about that too much.
