Xeon E5520 vs. i7 920

Thread Starter
I am looking to build a replacement rig for my dell ws and am wondering whether to get the i7 920 or xeon e5520. I do have plans on overclocking the cpu to (hopefully) 4.0 ghz, though I will be very happy with 3.5.

My current specs on the new system are:

MB: Intel DX58OG
CPU: Xeon E5520 or i7 920
GPU: Geforce GTX 480 (I already have this)
RAM: Undecided, need some recommendations
Case: Rosewill Challenger
PSU: Undecided, probably a corsair 750w modular
HDD: The old ones from my dell (see siggy)
Heatsink: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO or Intel extreme edition heatsink that comes with the 970/980x/990x

Thanks in advance

PS: Recommendations for a fan controller are also much appreciated

No point in buying Xeon. There was a rumor back in the day that Xeon's were binned higher than the non-server stuff. Totally false.

The reason i am looking at the xeon is because of price. I can get an e5520 for $50 whereas 920's are $125+. I know that the xeon will be more sluggish than the i7 at stock speeds, but that is why i wanted to overclock. I'm also looking at e5530's and e5540's, it all depends on the deals i find on ebay

I've decided to go with the E5530 due to price. Can anyone tell me the difference between the E5530 and the i7 920 besides the frequency and bus speed? And can anyone tell me how high I should be able to overclock the cpu with the 212?

You would be correct if this were a xeon on the 771 or 2011 platforms, where a 2011 has no overclocking ability and a 771 xeon can only be OCed with the FSB with no voltage adjustments. A nehalem xeon can be overclocked like any clarkdale and arrandale i3, i5, and i7, which can all be adjusted using the bclk. Pretend this is a slightly underclocked i7

The W series were binned higher, so it's not entirely false.

@ OP -

Make sure the board supports that chip. Not all of them do from the x58 chipset.
