I have tried a number of combinations but I seem to be limited to the max capacity of the native cores. VMWare can see the HT cores but still will only give me the Mhz of the 12 native CPUs.

I just want to have this machine at it's best before Chimpin starts next week.
Any chance of getting rid of VMWare and just throwing Linux on it natively?

Or on a thumbdrive. It's a sandbox.

Being a professional rack monkey I am going to play with VMware a bit. But for Chimp-a-thon '13 points will be king and a native install may have to happen.

I am thinking though, if the PPD gets too high a conversion back to work stuff might make me cry!

8GB RAM
averaging 50-55KPPD (Win 2K8r2 VM was running 55-60K)

Am I correct to assume that you're trying to run a Win 2K8 VM inside the main OS, Ubuntu 12.10 Server?

As indicated by TheBladeMaster01, your best bet would be to run F@H on Linux via a thumbdrive. It's not ideal, considering that you will be hindered by the read/write speed on the thumbdrive, but it's worth a try.

Another alternative is to pick up any unused harddrive, swap it with the harddrive that was originally installed in the server, install Linux in this temporary harddrive, and run F@H from there.

No. ESXi 5 enterprise plus is the host OS. The VM is Ubuntu 12.10 server edition. F@H client is 7.3.6.

I was hoping to get it running bigadv units but it has never managed to grab one. This morning it is set at 24 CPUs doing project 7809 @ 4min 6Sec. Est. PPD 63K

How big is a Flash drive install? We run our servers off micro SD so changing the install is pretty easy and I am curious how fast this rig can go.

Depends on what distro you use. 8GB should be more than enough, though
