New Card for Guild Wars 2 max?

Thread Starter
Hello all,

I started playing Guild Wars 2 yesterday and as expected, I am not able to play on max settings graphics. I don't game often but GW2 really got my attention. smile.gif

My current card is a HD 6850 on a Catleap 27" on 2560 x1440 res.

Here's the in-game settings atm, as you can see from bottom right of window, I get around 50 FPS on average.

But.. I wanna play on max settings, so which card you recommend which won't cost me millions? smile.gif

My 'rig' in sig.

Cheers OCers.

Maybe a 7850 or 70? I have a 7970 currently but owned a 7850 previously. Though the game is also very CPU intensive from my knowledge, so that may impact you more.

Guild Wars 2 AFAIK is a CPU Bound. So whichever the card you will choose, you NEED to at least have a great CPU, like i5 2500K.

As for your graphics card, I recommend the 7870 XT from sapphire...it's a great card, have a nice price/performance ratio.

At this point is there reason to recommend the 2500k? Where I see them, the 3570k doesn't seem to be much more.

Wow, if you can find the i5 3570K for awesome price, of course get it. The reason I recommend a 2500K is because I think that 3570K is expensive in your country. But since it's not, definitely grab an i5 3570K of course.

You said you don't game much, and you just picked up GW2. I would wait a bit and see how much you enjoy it down the road. MMOs have the habit of being chrome covered glamour initially, and then once you dig into it you have a completely different feeling.

He is in the UK so I'm not sure how big the difference for him is. In the US with Amazon and Newegg however, I haven't been seeing more that a $10 difference lately. $210-$220

Hmm, I guess we will better to wait for him to make the clarification, though.

I was at one point going to upgrade my current CPU (i5-2310) to the new gen 3570k at one point. Back then the prices weren't that different, don't know about now.

Now I don't know what to upgrade. Can't do both atm, heck, I gotta save up a bit for even one upgrade.

Thanks all.

I suppose if I were in your shoes I would get a better GPU first. Either a 7870/7850 or a 660 Ti. The ti is probably your best choice. Around here I see it at $300 USD, whereas 7850 is $200 and the 7870 is about $250, I have seen 7870's on sale a good bit, so whichever you can get a good price on. If the card doesn't satisfy your needs, then get a better cpu.
