Best 7970 for Overclocking

Thread Starter
What is the best 7970 for overclocking right now? I'm assuming one that has its voltage unlocked is a must? I want to try out a card from the red side as I have been using nvidia cards for quite some time. I will be folding on this card 24/7 so good cooling to keep the noise down is a necessity. I also would like to stick to air cooling at the moment so water cooling is out of the equation. Thanks and +rep for helpful answers as always thumb.gif

The MSi Lightnings are always well suited to OCing. Afterburner makes it easy to unlock voltage and clocks, and everything else you need to tinker with it is right there as well.

^This. The Lightning GHz Editions are pretty much the best 7970's availible.

From what I hear the Asus DirectCUii is also not a bad option. Runs a bit quiter than the TwinFrozr cooler, but I'm not sure how it compares in overclockability.

the problem with this is i can't seem to find them anywhere. I've looked across many forums and ebay and they're either way overpriced or just non existent. is there any good cards that are readily available?

From what I hear the Asus DirectCUii is also not a bad option. Runs a bit quiter than the TwinFrozr cooler, but I'm not sure how it compares in overclockability.

The Lightning is a waste of money unless you are using extreme cooling. They are all bnnned low for extreme cooling. On air and water they are no different than any other card.

The DC2 is a huge failure of a card, it's probably one of the worst cards you can buy.

Agree but the current lighting is voltage locked too frown.gif

I'm also searching for the best overclock card going to buy one tomorrow (europe time) i am looking at the dual-x and vapour-x 6GB (they dont have 3GB) so far i think they overclock decent close 1200mhz is been said for the vapour-x 6GB so as far as i know he could get one of those maybe ?

But want you opinion too for myself and i dont want to missleading to anyone biggrin.gif

NOTE : I am new to this forum if i make a mistake please warn me thumb.gif

Thank You

As the who opend this thread i am looking for a good 7970 for overclocking but i find that very hard becouse every one of them are voltaged lock and it seems that no one has a 100% way to disable the lock without getting the warrenty disabled biggrin.gif:D

I searched the net and read some threads on this forum (i joined today very good forum by the way) i found out that every card is very similliar to each other becouse of the voltage lock i had 2 asus directCU 2 top edition 7970's but the cards had a problem so i gave them back now im looking to buy a new card.

I was thinking of dual-x or vapour-x 6GB (they dont have the 3GB, 6GB is overkill for 1080p i know) some people are saying that you have a slightly better chance of reaching 1200mhz with the vapour-x but i dont know. there are not very new threads/posts about these cards.

The cards that have in stock :

I put a link to a local store its in turkish, the link is to let you know the exact card

Thats it, they are very low on stock they just brought couple hundred new cards 2 weeks ago there already sold out which is bad for me but good for the company biggrin.gif

which card will overclock the most even with voltage lock ?? and is there a card that have voltage lock in these ? are the 7950's locked too ?

NOTE : I am new to this forum if i make a mistake please warn me about it. thumb.gif

and what is the best overclocking card with locked voltage and is there one that isnt which i heard that all of them are now unlesss you find one that came couple months earlier before they stated shipping locked cards and i dont think i can find any mad.gif

I'm planning on getting ONE card this time since most games have problems with CF and SLI whats your though should get one or two ?? i will be upgrading exactly 11 months from now most likely becouse new cards are going to come out then biggrin.gif

I'm going to buy one tomorrow by the way (europe time)
THANK YOU

MSI OC = good card, based on reference design, unlocked voltage, and compatible with fullcover reference waterblock

Vapox 6gb = good card for aircooling, but not compatible with any fullcover waterblocks.

The MSI OC is more flexible because it is based on the reference design and it works well if you decide to watercool your card. If you have no intention of ever watercooling, the Vapor 6gb is the best option of what you have listed.

I prefer plain Jane reference cards, or revised cards that adhere strictly to AMDs reference design.
