Not sure if I need a sound card, help please D:

Hello everyone,

I currently have a asus p8z77-v motherboard and was looking to buy a gaming headset. I was looking at astro's but decided to get the ATH-AD700's. The real question is whether i need a new soundcard or not. I read around and some people were saying that z77's onboard sound will suffice. Thanks for any help you can provide!

Please feel free to recommend me a sound card and mic that would compliment these headphones well.

Thank you

ATH-AD700s can benefit from an amp. The on board amp on a asus DGX should suffice thumb.gif

Thanks for the reply! I'm really uneducated with sound cards. If I were to buy the dgx and plug it in would I be benefitting from the amp? Or do I have to make software tweaks? Sorry I just don't know how sound cards work.

Step 1: buy it

step 2: install it

step 3: profit!!!!

Hopefully you understood that joke.

Seriously though all you have to do is plug it in and away you go. The only software change would be the drivers. You could always play around with the software that comes with the sound card, but it is not necessary.

I'd say plug them into what you have now and listen for a bit, then decide if you want to upgrade.
For a mic, maybe check out the blue snowflake.

I recently heard one and was quite impressed with the sound quality (good for voice, not great for other sounds), they also seem to go on sale fairly often.

Picked one up on sale before for either $30 or $35. Not sure where you are, but they are currently $35 at Canada Computers.

Might be able to get someone to price match or something if you wanted one.

Since impedance on the ATH-AD700's is only 32 ohms I'm not sure an amp or soundcard with headphone amp would be necessary. My Titanium X-Fi HD (with no amp) drives my 50 ohm Sennheiser PC 360's wonderfully. I couldn't be happier with them. That being said I'm not recommending the Titanium as I'm not sure it would fit your typical usage.
