FX8120 Even throttling on stock?

Hello guys / ( Girls? ) from overclock.net! biggrin.gif

Specs below @ Signature.

Well, i'm actually a newcomer when it comes to overclocking. Especially with these bulldozer's.
I tried to overclock him to 4ghz, 200mhz x 20 as multiplier. With a vcore of 1.4. When stress testing the temps raised up to 51 degrees, then the multiplier gave itself a drop to 7.
I thought it were the VRM's overheating ( My Antec Kuhler Radiator is right next to it ), and it throttled my cpu. But then i set everything back to the default settings.
Normal settings 200x15.5 with a vcore of 1.3250. When stress testing it even goes to the 2.8GHZ! (200x14)

I think there is a setting in a bios causing this, or the vrms are overheating, but i have no clue what and why. Anybody here to help?
I disabled like everything in my bios, so i don't think that's the problem.

I updated my bios to P2.20. --> Asrock 970 Extreme 4. Still throttling at stock settings.. anyone?

That's a good board with decent VRMs so unless it's faulty, that won't be causing you any problems. How much airflow do you have going over your motherboard, any fans nearby?

That's a 4+1 power phase and that's not going to be beefy enough to handle an overclocked Bulldozer 8 core. You want a 8+1 to do any serious overclocking with one of those. That's the downside to them, they suck down a LOT of juice. I don't think its a faulty board, I just think its not got enough muscle to handle a FX-8100.

I replaced the whole radiator, to the front of the case, to give the VRM's some fresh air. Still throttling, but less then it used to be.
It's even throttling at 3.3GHZ. I dont think the VRM's are the problem, cause i used to be able to stream ( 100% ) without any problems. And that was with a freaking damn stock amd cooler.

Anyone? Even with the standard settings 200x15.5 (3.1ghz), the multiplier decreases.

VRMs, it can only be the VRMs. 4+1 phase isn't even beefy enough for Deneb/Thuban

Easy way to find out. Disable half the cores and see what happens. If it stops throttling then you know you need a beefier motherboard.

This guy is right! biggrin.gif. It were indeed the VRM's. I placed the coolermaster fan at the back of the case, fresh air is just cooling the vrm's now.

Thanks guys.
