i7 3930k Overclocking Throttling Help?

Thread Starter
I have my 3930k overclocked to what seems to be prime95 stable, 4.7ghz at 1.46v, temps are very low and barely break 70C as I am on custom water cooling, but I get occasional throttle in prime95 that throttles for a little bit at a time after a while, then goes back up to 4.7ghz. What can cause these throttling? I have tried tweaking many bios settings and reading OC guides, what should I try to adjust to stop the throttle? I have also read on forums that it could mean I need to cool my RAM, so if it would help, what is a good RAM fan that will work with my GSKILL ARES 2133mhz (link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231553 )? Thx for help in advance smile.gif

1) That voltage is high for that OC
2) The VRMs are probably part of the throttling issue, can't do anything about it other than cooling them. Remember, there are some on the back of the motherboard.

1, I have tried doing lower voltage, but my cpu is kind of a poor overclocker, if I go lower voltage than this it will bsod code 0x00000101 which is add more vcore, and 1.46v is stable, and I have intel tuning protection plan, so I am willing to risk the high voltage smile.gif
2, Thx for the help, I am going to buy a ram cooler hoping it will help
Thx for your help smile.gif , also what is a good ram cooler that is good for my ram, and what is the best cheap way to cool all of the vrms on the back of the motherboard?

Haha, I was just going to suggest the protection plan. Great little bit of insurance.

I never use RAM coolers, they don't get warm enough to even worry about. As for the VRM coolers,
I use these: http://koolance.com/video-ram-heat-sinks on the back ones.
But there is also these: http://www.jab-tech.com/bga-ram-cooling/enzotech-forged-copper-low-profile-vga-memory-heatsink-bcc9/

And my front ones are watercooled.

I am probably going to get some vrm coolers, and maybe ram fans too just to eliminate all possible causes, thx for your help smile.gif

70C at 1.46v on a 3930k! Wow, that's some awesome cooling. I'm at 1.424v @ 78C on a Swiftech H220.

I need 1.48v to get 4.9 stable... try disabling Intel Speedstep Technology to prevent throttling, if I understand your post correctly. smile.gif

Thx for helping, but I have EIST, and C states all disabled, I have tested a lot of bios settings, and temps are low on cpu, the only possible thing I can think of is too much heat on possibly the vrms or ram smile.gif

And since you're already watercooling the CPU you might consider picking one of these up: VRM Block OR Full Block

The chipset really doesn't get hot so the full block really isn't needed, mostly just have to worry about the VRMs.

Just a thought for maybe later on. I have the XSPC one and works very well.
