Thread Starter
I don't know why I post these energy threads thinking they will inspire excitement and optimism. A few posts go by and then I remember I usually have the same opinions.

Way to get my hopes up for nothin, internet.

*Wawing* I'm Excited, While I don'¨t believe that any form of combustible material or Hydrogen energy cells will oust King Bensin from his palace, this might be a good way to localize fuel production for thirsty vehicles such as construction, trucks, and farming equipment.
In the end we will need iPod Classic sized Batteries capable of taking a Ford Excursion from Istanbul to Berlin without recharging. And fusion reactors to charge them... But in the meantime stuff like this could be a great boon to semi stationary equipment since they wouldn't require a distribution system greater than homebase.

Rant addition:

Heres the thing boys and boysettes. Big oil is looking to change their profile, not because of green washing but because oil is running out. Even if they can post record numbers over the next 10-20 years they will need to change their supply. We already see that with major Oil companies investing heavily in other energy forms.

Conspirac theories and false truisms is stuff for the loony standing on a trash bin in an alley, shouting his lungs dry.

I remember seeing a report published by an "expert panel" a couple years ago...that was seemingly not paid by some "green" organization. It said at the current rate of consumption the world only had about a 100 years of crude oil left before the major supplies dried up. However, since then there have been additional major deposits found. The same report said that we had a 1000 years left on coal and natural gas. That was peak production. The point at which the supply starts getting low and the price sky rockets. I am quite certain we will have oil for things like plastics and other petroleum based products forever...they just might get more expensive, but at some point the market will force us to find some other energy source.

Though if you look up the grennies info they will say things like we have as little as 12 years left of oil. That I fail to believe.

In the last couple of years only one major oildeposits has been found. There has been some findings of Oilshales. But there have been major findings atleast reported from Kazakhstan, Iran and Brazil. A high estimate of the major oilfields discovered since 1999 is 176 billion barrels. Since the world consumes roughly 90 million barrels a day that supply would last about 5 years.

I have to agree with you there though, I don't think we'll ever run out of Gas and Coal since the deposits are so large that the energy production will most likely have shifted towards something else such as Fusion or Throrium.
Oil based plastics van be replaced with Cellulose based ones.

The same could be said about the estimates of oil from many producing nation, overstating the supply is a common practise to ensure financial stability and increase the possible equity one can borrow against

Humanity requires oil for our machinery which will create the equipment needed to produce renewable energy.
Basically, once we run out of oil we're effed unless we do something before we run out.

Plastics and others alike would suffer greatly as well you know. I want better fuel to come out too as soon as possible, but we do need oil.

There is a difference between water and hydrogen hydrogen can be burned and can be used in a gas driven car as long as the gas is compressed before use (as it is 11 times or so less dense than normal fuel evap)
Deuterium and tritium which are 2 isotopes of hydrogen are the true future with the new ITER core fusion reactor which shall be able to produce 10x the power that is put in.(That is if the tokamak doesn't burn under the immense 10 million degree heat or gets too radiated with the alfa radiation the fission puts out)

Most likely. It will cost many hundreds of billions of dollars and decades to add hydrogen fuel pumps to all the stations around the country and provide a system equal to what we have built up in refueling with gasoline in over a century.

That is assuming that this new discovery can be scaled up for a national level tomorrow.

Hydrogen fueled cars are very nice. They have some technological issues, but they will be overcome down the road. When I was doing a job a couple years back for KTLA/KCAL, GM brought 3 Hydrogen vehicles to the studio and let people drive them. I was impressed, aside from the fact that there were only 5 places in all of California that you could fill them up, and they had SQUAT for range.
