Asus or Creative?

Thread Starter
I'm looking to buy a new sound card. I currently have JVC RX700s which I absolutely love, but my stupid onboard sound doesn't do them much justice I don't think.

I'm not too worried about price but I don't want to go crazy. Looking to spend up to R1.5k on sites like http://www.takealot.com/computers/sound-cards-6551?page=1 and http://titan-ice.co.za/index.php?cPath=58_109&osCsid=k74edmb3dcit2ee0nbbu2ir990 (those are South African sites).

I don't listen to much music, I mostly just play games, so good 3D placement is a must. When I do listen to music it's usually everything, accoustics, electro, rock and all that kind of stuff. It'd also be a major plus if there are decent Linux drivers for the card.

From what I've seen online, the Creative X-Fi cards have the upper hand dealing with games but I wanted to confirm if that's still true.

Thanks smile.gif
It plays TF2

My suggestion FWIW

Asus D2X
Or
Asus STX
From what I know there is a good open-source driver base for asus sound cards, I'm pretty sure they have drivers that play nicely with Linux

just got the creative zx. blew my mind. i know they are known for bad support and such, which they do, but this card and peripheral are just so nice to have. the driver/audio control panel has been revamped alot since x-fi titanium/ recon. highly recommend thumb.gif

The new ZxR card from Creative has a very similar design to the ASUS Xonar Phoebus. My problem with the Phoebus was that the card had some very nice components on it, but the sound quality and software were absolutely terrible. Since the release of Creative's Recon series of cards, the company has been updating its software on a much more regular basis than it had done in the past 4 to 5 years. ASUS has still not straightened out much of anything for the Xonar Phoebus card.

IDK what the PC market is like in south africa, but in the US, you can find a creative titanium HD for dirt cheap used.

If that is out of the question, I doubt you will need anything more than an asus dgx, and even if you want to splurge, then the creative Z cards aren't bad either.
