Final thoughts about new build - Page 2

post #11 of 63

I already have it unfortunately, in hindsight I wouldn't have gotten it but when I asked 4 years ago noone objected lol. Unless it's somehow hurting my build I don't think there's a reason to change it. (is there?). I'm trying to keep the budget low and already went 150e over the planned qq

CPU LGA1155 Intel® Core™ i5-3570K, 3.40GHz BOX 22nm
MB LGA1155 Z77 ASRock Z77 EXTREME4,2xPCIe/DDR3/SATA3/GLAN/USB3.0/VGA/DVI/7.1
SSD SATA3 180GB Intel® 520 Series SSDSC2CW180A3K5, 550/520MB/s - wanted 120 gb but sold out -_-, 5 years warranty and bit more space is fine I guess.
DIMM DDR3 8GB 1866MHz Patriot Venom Red CL10, P38G180UR - it was a good deal, looked at ram a long time and slower one wasn't much or cheaper at all and found good reviews on this one.
Arctic Silver Céramique 2 Warmeleitpaste, 2.7g,
LGA775/1156/1366/AM2/AM3 Xigmatek Gaia SD1283, 120mm/PWM - wanted coolermaster hyper evo 212 but it's sold out, this one seems adequate.

As for the graphics card I'm looking for it at other shops, it's mostly ASUS, MSI, Sapphire, Gigabyte, I'll have to call tomorrow and check what they have and then I'll post. Here's what I'm keeping from current PC:
BenQ G2400WD Black 24" 5ms, 2ms(GTG) HDMI Widescreen LCD Monitor
COOLER MASTER COSMOS 1000 RC-1000-KSN1-GP Black/ Silver Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case
COOLER MASTER Real Power Pro1000 RS-A00-EMBA 1000W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply - I know its overkill but it came with the case and it worked well so far, when I put another card it will do well I guess. Would be hard selling it now..
ASUS 20X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe Black SATA Model DRW-2014L1T LightScribe Support
SAMSUNG Black 1.44MB 3.5" Internal Floppy Drive Windows 98SE/ ME/ 2000/ XP - OEM floppy LOL but I figured I might need it some day, should probably disconnect it or something and keep it in a box biggrin.gif
Western Digital Caviar Blue WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive x2 for storage
LevelOne WNC-0500 32bit PCI MIMO Wireless Card
Asus XONAR DG soundcard

aaaand that's about it.

Pretty good, but a couple things need to be changed.
First, try to get G.Skill, Kingston or Samsung ram. They are good for overclocking smile.gif
Second, cancel that PSU. Far too big, not really a great unit. Find one thats in the 700-800W range (more then enough) from this list http://www.overclock.net/t/183810/faq-recommended-power-supplies
Third, how much did you pay for that coolermaster cosmos? If it was more then $140, you should have gone with a HAF 932, probably one of the best cases you can buy.
And Forth, I would scrap that Asrock Extreme 4 and spend a little more to get a Gigabyte UD3H, you will be much happier with it (Take it from someone who owns the extreme 4) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128544&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

Other then that nice, whats your grand total?

I'll see what they have about ram, this one seemed descent and good price, think it's 1.5v too.
I got the PSU and case 4 years ago, I don't really remember how much I paid but I got it all on newegg when I was in usa, probably spent more than I should have, I did ask for advice at lots of places tho and this PC served me well so far. Was fun carrying that huge ass case across atlantic xD
What's the difference between the motherboards? I'm not really techie person, I just put it all together and use it happily for years biggrin.gif I won't be spending a lot of time playing with it, maybe OC cpu to something not too extreme and use normally.
One problem is I don't have as much options as in USA or UK, some things aren't available here, a lot of parts are made only for eastern europe so it's annoying (I'm buying in Serbia, in my country options are even worse).

This. see http://www.overclock.net/t/183810/faq-recommended-power-supplies , http://www.overclock.net/t/738097/psu-review-database

Also, Samsung 840 pro is the top SSD now. Intel 520 is equal to or slower than Samsung 830. 840 (non pro) is cheaper but uses TLC nand instead of MLC (longer endurance). If you're dropping $180-190 on a Intel 520 180GB, I'd rather get a 256GB 840 pro for $215 http://us.ncix.com/products/?usaffiliateid=1000031504&sku=77219&vpn=MZ-7PD256BW&manufacture=Samsung%20Memory%20%26%20Storage&promoid=1277 or 830 256GB for $160-170ish.

I'd invest ~$70 in a Rosewill Capstone 550/550-M or 650/650-M. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182263 , http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182068

Arctic Silver is not as good as MX-4 or Nt-H1 (Noctua). http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186038 , http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608008

A cheap & more efficient cooler compared to 212 Evo that's more quiet is the True Spirit 120M (http://www.nansgaminggear.net/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=TS%2D120M , http://www.amazon.com/Spirit-specifically-Micro-tower-user/dp/B00A0EC0X6/, http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=FAN-TS120)

Go for Asrock Z77 Extreme6 or Gigabyte Z77X-D3H / UD3H because Z77 Extreme4 uses cheap D-PAK mosfets. Check out Sin's terrific guide: http://sinhardware.com/images/vrm.jpg

He has stated multiple times that he lives in the UK so he cant get any rosewill products, and i dont think he can get that True Spirit cooler either. The Xigmatek Gaia is decent enough.
Good advice about the mobo though.

@AlphaC
ok, I can change to 840/pro, they have both, normal is 94e, pro is 134e however, also 840 250gb version is 156 but it's not a pro.
When I did psu test it showed I'd need around 600w for 2 7970s, oc'd cpu and all the extra stuff so if I'm gonna change psu what's the best size?

Should I skip on thermal paste for now if I can't find best one? It's 5e and I can get it later when I need it and use one that comes with fan now?
I looked at that pic and I have no idea what I'm looking at honestly, also no extreme 6 but they do have ud3h and can change to that.

I could link you guy's what they have but it's in serbia, and should mention it's probably best equipped/priced store so looking elsewhere is annoying, hard digging to find stuff at not so great prices.

Edit: adding more replies to posts above, it's going fast smile.gif

@ADHDadditiv
I don't think I mentioned UK biggrin.gif I live in Montenegro and I'm buying stuff in Serbia, would order from abroad but not many good websites send here, plus the customs and tax would increase the price significantly.

@shilka
Thanks god, had me worried. Yeah it's old I made this PC in 2008 and it ran everything preeeetty well until recently, started getting artifacts in games, lockups after long sessions and vga fan is making annoying noise. Plus I don't have dx11, mobo doesn't support ddr3 etc so must update.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171022 < this is PSU I have.
Should I spend money on new one? Is there any benefit really?

You could save some money on your power bill by buying a new PSU and you really sould its not crap as i first tought but it not super great either and its massive overkill for your needs

Its inefficient as hell compared to PSU´s today
