That's around 1.5 years of 24/7 folding on the CPU, sometimes with the GPU running alongside it. Which should be around 14 000 hours.

Of course I have no proof beyond that but folding is pretty much as stressful of a program as they get and I have no reason to lie. And my situation isn't abnormal, if anything it's your claims about CPUs degrading after 6 months that need proof.

Also your previous point about 3dmark is pointless for many reasons. Please find a proper bench between the two CPUs, not a bunch of different scores made into an average. (hint: the performance will be the same since they're the same thing except the QX OCs worse and has higher TDP since it's older). The Q9650 is a newer E0 stepping and thus the power consumption is somewhat lower. Unless you need the unlocked multi for extreme OCing the Q9650 was the better choice, however it came out later.

Most CPUs last a really long time unless horribly abused.

It's nearly a given that the more expensive, unlocked, QX9650 is going to be in more expensive systems with faster GPUs and/or be more heavily OCed.

On an silicon level, there is probably just as much variation between two random QX9650 samples as there are between a random Q9550 and QX9650, assuming both are C1s (there are no C1 Q9650s and no E1 QX9650s so I'm comparing the the Q9550 and QX9650, both of which exist in the C1 stepping, for the sake of argument).

Also, your graph doesn't prove that extreme edition cpu's are more reliable in the long run or suffer less degredation. The graph only shows the degredation based on temperature and overclocking.

If a CPU hasn't degraded in 14,000 hours, then 6,000 more isn't going to degrade it.

To say that an Extreme edition CPU is less prone to degredation than a normal chip is a totally baseless claim, period. Unless you have a QX9650 & Q9650, both with 20,000 hours at the same OC/Voltage, and the Q9650 is unstable/degraded, you have no proof whatsoever to backup your claims. Stop being so hostile towards others, hopelessly pushing your point doesn't make it correct.

No, I just said that an argument that claims that all LGA1366 chips are Xeons falls flat on its face by the way of logic.
Did you know that Intel chips up to IVB are built top-down? Which means the way they bin the SB-E platform chips is that the good ones are for servers and normal ones for, the high leakage malfunctioning hexa cores are cut down to the 3820 by means of laser. 3820 is not a extreme processor but why does it last as long as the extreme ones do? IT'S BECAUSE THEY ARE XEONS
IB and SB is another whole thing by itself but actually truth is during the first round of nehalem desktop i7s were just w3xxx that failed to be Xeons and the w3xxx are the w5xxx with high leakage and a disabled QPI link
Although IB and SB parts are made FOR XEON 1P FIRST. then the ones that fail binning of xeons becomes normal i7s and i5s.
ALL INTEL PROCESSORS ARE XEONS IN REALITY.

And also if i'll throw AMD here although AMD uses LGA on the server platforms it doesn't change, the socket is different but the die IS EXACTLY THE SAME.

The 3dmark bench isn't an argument in favor of the QX anyways since it's not an indication of CPU performance.

And my CPU has done over 20 000 hours, you're just demanding some sort of proof about it. FB picture with the build parts from 2009 enough? What sort of proof can I provide that will just prove 20 000 hours of uptime.



Still unless you were folding for that 20 000 hours I can guarantee to you that 14 000 hours of folding is much harsher on the CPU than whatever you were doing. The fact of the matter is that there hasn't been any proof of extreme CPUs lasting longer than non extreme CPUs and there wont be since the chips last for such a long time anyways. If anything extreme chips go out faster on average because people tend to push the overly hard.

$600 is nowadays a bit too much from 980X. I have both 990X@4.4 GHz and 3960X@4.4 GHz - not that much performance difference really in game performance. X79 has some feature benefits though - but I like my X58 more than X79. thumb.gif
