Hello, I did some searching and apparently your not the only one with this problem, in fact quite a bunch seem to be getting this problem. But I do think I found the solution to your problem.

Apparently this problem of yours is caused by a bug in Microsoft Update which is a new version of Windows Update. It CAN be viruses too, such as blaster and welch. but first to check if its caused by Microsoft

Try first to disable Automatic updates by goin to Start -> Run then write "sysdm.cpl" without the marks of course go to tab Automatic updates and disable and see if that fixes the CPU usage.

And if it does you can go to Windows update webpage -> Change Settings and click 'I want to go with Windowsupdate only'.

I dont see this option though in my windows update, but on the other hand I dont have this problem.

So try it and let us know if it works, hope it works out for ya and I could be of help.

if you don't have sp2 on windows the virus if I remember right can infect you just by being online without you even doing anything. it struck me that way once or twice

Well so far what I've read people just playing CS and such or whatever has found SVCHOST to be draining CPU usage, even thoose that re-installs Windows. Now you say you just did that. I havent seen any reason as to why SVHCHOST suddenly decides to go to Microsoft Update lookin for updates. I guess its somehow activates itself.

Just to clarify things... when I said Change Settings in Windows Update... I think they meant in Microsoft Update page. Thats were you probebly will find the Change Settings and click 'I want to go with Windowsupdate only' thing.

Another way to check if you DONT have Microsoft Update is to check the right side, you will probebly see a box there Showing something like "ohhh upgrade to Microsoft Update its way better then Windows update etc. And to get to microsoft page you just Click Microsoft Update icon in Windows update.

as for the sound did you install the drivers? if you just oogly booglied your hard drive (forgot the term, you know like short term memory loss) and installed windows you should put the disk that came with your motherboard as well as downloading all the latest video drivers

edit: REFORMATED! that's the one

If svchost is using more MEMORY than explorer.exe, it's some type of trojan or virus. Safe to say you can end the process.
