the Sennheiser HD600, HiFiMAN HE-500 and Audeze LCD-2 is better at handling the more complex passages of death metal, black metal, rock, metal, alternative, etc specially the planar magnetics.

to be honest with any of these headphones you can't go wrong.

I only wish that any of them were in my budget. I don't think I could stretch it even as far as the HD600s and I know I couldn't go as far as the HE-400 or HE-500.

I'm sure that the DT770s have colored my sound search, but it could also be that I just didn't like the sound of the headphones I tried (or some other technical issue if the adapter I tried was indeed bad). I've read others (most recently you, Tjj226 Angel) saying that the HD558s are not good, and I definitely heard that.

I didn't like the sound of the A900x's partly due to how they fit after being stretched all to hell by the rack they were on, but partly because I'm looking for open headphones.

I may go back next week and listen to the 225s again but this time using one of their demo systems where I can use the 1/4" jack on them rather than the adapter just to isolate that part. I really wanted to like them, I really did. I've read that they're really the sweet spot in the Prestige line.

Yeah the 558s are garbage. I don't get how sennheiser can make great headphones on one had, and complete crap on the other and charge just as much.

You weren't supposed to like the ath-A900X you are supposed to like the ath-AD(DDDDDDD)900x

What I would suggest with the 225s is that if they are on display, it is quite possible that dirt/debris might have made it's way onto the driver and is screwing with the mid range giving you the veiled sound. In any case, something is not right with them if you are hearing a dip in the 2-5K frequency range (the music will sound like there is a blanket over it).

Fair enough. Maybe I'll look into them. I see the AD700x on Amazon for $100 right now, though I worry about the bass on them. Some say it's good, others say it's not so good.

That's exactly how it sounded. I couldn't have put it better. It's interesting to me, though, that it didn't affect the SR80 that was 2 spots to the left. I wish now that I had tried the 325i or the RS1i (I think, might have been the RS2i) that were 1 and 2 spots to the right.

I still wonder if it was that adapter somehow, though. It was out on the desk, not attached to the cans when I gave it a try.

Where are you auditioning these headphones? Maybe the problem is the source it's self. The adapter should not do anything like that unless there was a good amount of dirt in it. Normally adapters don't make a bit of difference at all unless they are made from plastic by child slave labor in north korea or something like that tongue.gif

Also, just a thought....... IDK what your situation at home is, but have you thought about speakers? Good speakers generally sound better than even top end headphones. You would still need to buy a receiver, but seriously, if you are looking for hi fi stuff, a 2 channel system is going to kick the crap out of what ever headphones you buy for under 300. Just my two cents.

They're being auditioned at a Home Theater shop near my work (I honestly think they're the cheapest thing in the store, by a long shot...even the RS1i's), out of my GS2 Skyrocket which is admittedly not the best source but it seems to do well with some of the Android enhancements available (Gone Mad Media Player and Noozoxide). I used the same player for all 4 headphones (plus the 2 others at Best Buy).

Home situation is: I work at home 3ish days a week and my wife does home daycare. Speakers are completely out, even though I'm on a separate floor. Naptime would never happen, and my wife would want to strangle me by the second day. That, and I would probably need to get a better receiver than the mid-90s (guessing) Pioneer I have in my loft/office.

I was just clutching at straws about the adapter. It was the only thing I could think of. Maybe it was the songs, but again they sounded better (to me) on the SR80i, so I don't know. Songs I played were all either 320kbps MP3 or flac..

I wish there were more places for me to audition different headphones. I've thought about the HD598, but I'd like to hear them first. There's someone selling the HD580 right now for what I imagine is a decent price, but I don't know how they sound either.

Also, I think I mentioned owning some old Sennheisers in the OP. They were the HD-203's, I just checked. I gave them to my son when I got my Beyers, though he uses some cheap SkullCandy headphones that I recabled for him instead most of the time. Not relevant to my quest, but thought I'd clarify the Senns I owned.

lol I hear ya.

Weird that the home audio store would be like that though. Ask them to take the 225s and plug them into a headphone amp or a receiver with no EQ......maybe that might help?? Again, it could just be a screwed up pair of headphones.

The HD598s are sort of anemic. They are really flat and lifeless. The HD580s are fuller and warmer.....more bass as well.

I know I am just going to get flamed right here and now, but what about the AKG Q701s? They are very open, but the bass is lacking. I don't particularly notice since I EQed them with no obvious distortion and I personally like them a lot.

It's a possibility (the Q701s), though it's a little odd that they charge more for a color other than lime green...

I'm going to go back and ask them to plug them in to something else other than my phone to see if I can get a better idea of the sound.

Just hope whatever they plug them in to doesn't color the sound too badly...they have the Grados set up in a room full of McIntosh equipment and at least 1 1.2k turntable (I asked because I was curious).

Sounds like the place I go to. A bunch of western electric amps, Synthesis, custom tube amps. Bunch of record players some of which are an upwards of 25K.

Tube amps are going to effect the grados, but from what I have been told, Mclntosh is not a very tubey sounding amp. So you should be ok. Or you can join my camp and love tube amps thumb.gif

I'd love to give a tube amp a serious try at some point. I love the way some of them look. I'm just not anywhere near good enough at reading a schematic or soldering to try to build one.

Mmmm don't bother. I have a friend who is trying to start up a custom tube amp business that can design an amp around your budget.

If nothing else, I am sure there are circuits that have photographic tutorials. LEARN first and then look up some western electric schematics for your amp.

Even if that doesn't work, just google how read a schematic. The reality is that reading it is rather simple, trying to figure out how to take a schematic and translating that into a real world product is rather difficult. Maybe you could start off with a cmoy. There are sooooo many tutorials on a cmoy amp that you should have 0 trouble with it, and it is supper cheap too.
