Is it voltage locked?

No, it's not. You can crank it up to 1.3 volts on the core and memory is fixed at 1.6 volts which doesn't really matter. I'm running it at 1125/1575 at 1.15 volts and it seems to be working fine. Of course, every chip is different so your clocks will probably vary too.

PS: I should mention that the VRMs for the GPU and the memory do not have any heatsinks so I stuck some copper ones on them. According to GPU-Z, the VRMs don't go past 70C. Didn't bother to check how far they went before I took the card apart but I'm pretty sure they would have been a lot higher as those heatsinks were scorching hot when I touched them.

Thank you, I think I will go with this model.
It's by far the cheapest one ncix, and even if the pcb is not reference, that kinda help me, the reference pcb is too long for my case, but not the powercolor v3 biggrin.gif

What do you mean, you added some heatsink on the VRM?
Could you post some picture, I really don't know what you mean. Even if I don't put heatsink, I should be able to OC it a bit right?
Thank you

Cyclops,
I have the same card, Powercolor's 7970 v3 AX7970 3GBD5-2DHV3
I have been trying everything in order to undervolt this card. It seems like mine is voltage locked, but you say that you have had success adjusting the VDCC?! Can you tell me what you did?

Nothing special. I used MSI Afterburner to adjust the clocks and the voltage.

Btw, you might be able to slap a 7950 reference fullcover block on it if you mill the block. Reference 7950s have one less choke where the block fills that missing spot with copper, why who the heck knows but they filled the missing spot with copper. I'd assume you can simply mill that protrusion off and the block will clear your card. It might be worth a shot.

thanks, tsm106. i did it.

i don't mean to resurrect this thread but i just want to share how i voided the warranty of my ek block to maintain a quiet rig. well, i tried to sell the 7950 with the block but the gpu went the latter stayed. so, here it is . . .

did not really milled it but hacksawed the protrusion in place. also filed the raised screw holes covered with electrical tape.

filed some areas to make the holes on the pcb line up to the ones for the core (the only ones used).

here is the top view . . .

and installed . . .

can't find any zip ties, so i am using clamps to ensure the pcb stays in contact where it should. tested after an hour of C3 . . .

it works and now the pump sound is back.redface.gif

Hey you should repost this in the watercooling forums. PPL need to see that this simple mod is simple! This thread will die here because it's out of the scope of most ppl in this section of the forum.
