3.3ghz Q6600 on P5K on AIR?

Ok, like my title says I am trying to breathe some more life into my old dinosaur of a system. I had gigabyte board with an E6300 that I was able to OC to 4ghz many eons ago so OCing is not new to me, but it has been a while. I am not gaming any more, but music recording has been taking up a larger part of my free time lately. Using a computer in a studio means that it needs to be quiet, but lately it has been showing its shortcomings more and more.

I am planning on OCing it to help speed things up a bit so I am wondering if you guys think I could get to around 3.3ghz on air. CPU is a Q6600 B3 stepping, Asus P5K vanilla, 4gb Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800. I have a scythe yasya cooler on the way. I will deal with the fan noise if it is a problem, but right now I need to get the speed up. I have heard that VDroop can be an issue with these boards, I will enable the voltage damper , but can someone liink me to the pencil mod in case I need it?

According to the specs on the board it will support DDR2 1066. Will I see a large speed boost by switching to the faster memory? I am running WinXP 32 so I will only be able to use 3gb of memory either way I go. As far as the rest of the specs go, it has an HIS 5670 video card, scythe mid case, no open expansion slots, two sata HD's.

Let me know what you guys think.

There is your vanilla pencil mod

You should be able to do those clocks just fine, and you have experience. Switching to faster RAM (of the same series) almost always has better results in sythetic benchmarks, but you rarely see a real world performance gain that is worth anything tangible.

Thanks Hacksword. I hope this old girl still has a few tricks up her sleeve. Bought a house and have a new baby on the way so the computer upgrade will have to wait for a little bit.

Well I finally got everything put together after dealing with shipping mistakes and just general incompetence with both the local usps and the interent seller. By the time I finally recieved the cooler a month after Iordered it, I didnt have any time to work on the computer. Oh well, water under the bridge as they say.

I have successfully OC'd it to 3.3ghz and it is rock solid. Under four instances of prime95 running a high heat and a blend test for 12hrs each (24hrs total) my max temp was 62c. I am happy with the results because I no longer have lockups or drop outs running moderate loads of effects plugins and that is what I was after.

I do have one interesting quirk that I am hoping someone might be able to explain to me though. My wife and I are running ths same video cards. They are both HIS HD5670's with 1gb of GDDR5. I have my card OC'd in the catalyst software with the GPU running at 850mhz (base 775) and the memory running at 1040mhz (base 1000mhz) and hers is running at the stock speeds. When I run a synthetic bench program called Novabench, I am getting around 220 fps and she is getting about 830fps. Why is she getting nearly 4 times the fps on the same graphics as me? Hers is an AMD system built on an X4 (955 I think) running at 3.4 ghz, but according to the benching software I have a higher score in the cpu dept. Likewise she has faster RAM, but our scores are not terribly far apart. For some reason her HD read and write speeds are much better than mine, but I dont see why that would affect the graphics rating. So if you guys or gals can help me figure this out I would appreciate it. I dont do a lot of gaming anymore, but it would be nice to get the best performance I can when I do play.

Thanks

P.S- I had an unused copy of WinXP X64 laying around so I decided to wipe the computer clean and start with a fresh install of X64 so that I could utilize the extra RAM. Finding the right drivers was a PITA, but I got everything starigh and it is running solid.
