They based tomb raider sales off of metacritic ratings.
I'm not even joking. I'll try and find the source.

Square Enix forecasted each game would sell about 80 to 90 percent of its potential.

I would just like to see Square come out and admit that Final Fantasy is pretty much what has done them in. They put big hopes into the western franchises , all of which did well, but not to their expectations?? I was kinda chuckling reading that article.

This whole fiasco is stupid. Square Enix has made some idiotic decisions and released TERRIBLE games lately:

-Most of the mobile Final Fantasy games
-The utterly-reviled FF14 MMO, which was completely scrapped after years of work and millions of dollars, and is currently being re-done from the ground up
-FF13, which was a cinematic disaster of an FF game
-Kingdoms Hearts 3, which still hasn't seen the light of day (despite all the spin-off games)
-FF Versus 13, which has "been in development" for 7 years now
-Dragon Quest X, which had not gained traction in US markets, and which is barely selling at all on Wii U
-etc, etc, etc.

In fact, I dare say the only good games to come out of Square Enix recently were from their subsidiary companies (like Eidos). Square Enix was hoping that sales of those 3 games (Tomb Raider, Hitman Absolution, and Sleeping Dogs) would save the rest of their failing company, and are blaming the European and US markets for not saving them from themselves.

Bunch of idiots. I'd say they deserve what they get, but it's the programmers who are going to suffer for this, not the vapid top-level management morons. Quit wasting money on idiotic pride projects, and put out quality games like you used to, Squenix!

Roll 2 Dice, add the sum, place 6 zeros on the end.

Also, as the game gets discounted, they are getting hit with price protection, about which they are rather incensed.

Not including DD, though... which isn't factored here.

Wow, just wow...I have nothing to say except thanks for sharing!

Sleeping dogs was probably one of the worst pieces of software I have ever had the displeasure of interacting with.

I'm just going with the number that tends to get thrown around. From what I've seen, as of 2010 only 10-20% of all PC game sales were DD, so barring a huge change, 10-20% of total sales being PC (whether retail or DD) still holds some relevance. Of course that's across all PC games, so crapware at retail is probably skewing that somewhat.

Basically until publishers start doling out PC DD numbers (and consoles as well since there is a growing DD selection on them) nobody has a clue, other than mostly guessing with the 10-20% figure that most seem to go by. I'd be a bit shocked if TR sold more than 1 million on PC to date though.

It's unreal that this game is considered a failure. I wonder how big the production budget was.

I really hope this doesn't make them gunshy about big budget titles going forward since by all accounts TR was one of the best adventure games in recent years.

The publishers don't get full MSRP on each copy sold, and I'm sure their totals include the bundled copies from AMD's Never Settle program as well. Who knows what their actual profit margins are.

Their predictions were ridiculous to say the least though.

Steam is growing by like 100% year-to-year.

Counting chickens before they hatch.

They are hurting so bad for money. Maybe if Square Enix would actually make games their fans want to play. Terrible FF14 MMO, terrible Final Fantasy game this console generation and no KH3?

They are revamping FF14. They had better hope they get it right this time around.
