Not your regular z77 vs x79 build help.

Thread Starter
I was browsing Craigslist today like I tend to do when there's some downtime at work. I searched for all my usual suspects, and to my surprise "Caselabs" produced a result. I saw an insane build for an amazing price and I just had to jump on it. I wanted to hold out for a corsair 900d, but this, when I saw this listed for $1500 I just couldn't pass it up.

Without further adieu:

CPU - i7 3820
RAM - Corsair Dominator platinum 4x8GB 2400mhz
Case - Caselabs sth10
Motherboard - asrock x79 extreme 11
Graphics - 2 x Evga 680 gtx 680 4gb classified with backplates.
Power - Lepa 1600
Extra - koolance 450s d5
(Everything is like new, all boxes and manuals included)

My current sig rig:

CPU - i7 3770k
RAM - Samsung 30nm 4x4GB
Monitor - 3 x ASUS VN247H-P
Case - Corsair 700D
Motherboard - EVGA Z77 FTW
Hard Drive - Crucial M4 256GB - 2 x Raid0
Graphics - 3 x 7970 w/ XSPC Razor waterblock
Power - Corsair AX1200

So my little dilemma is what to make from all of this? What to keep and what to sell?

Even though I never had a problem with my 7970 trifire, I haven't had an nvidia card in a very long time. Thing is, I'd definitely want to watercool, but these classified cards only take an Evga hydro copper water block which is always out of stock and supremely expensive.

I'm pretty set on keeping the x79 board, the Lepa psu and the corsair ram, as well as the Caselabs.

So what do you guys think?

Edit- the asrock board is actually an extreme 11. I was sure I typed it in, guess not, tongue.gif

There's only one thing to do:

But in all seriousness... you scored a really good deal on some really good parts. This is what I would do, if I had the patience to put together a really nice rig.

Now if the X79 Board is the Extreme6 or Extreme9 I would keep it. If it's not I would sell it. I would also sell the 3820, the 3770k, and Z77 FTW motherboard too.

I would pick up an ASRock X79 Extreme6 (unless it already is that) and would grab a 3930k with the money from selling the two motherboards and two CPU's.

I would also sell all three of the 7970's and the two 680's. Use that money to pick up two Titans.

I would sell the AX1200 and keep the Lepa 1600.

I would sell the 700D and use the Caselabs STH10

I would sell the Samsung memory and I would just use the Dominator Platinum 2400MHz memory for the build.

Then sell and purchase whatever you need to re-complete or re-do your custom loop.

Thanks for that!

I was actually on a very similar train of though as you're proposing. I have to estimate what I can get for the parts I already have and see if I can fit the titans and the 3930k with minimal expense.

Definetly keep the 3820, the motherboard and the RAM. I'd probably hit and miss on the GPU's though as you have three 7970's already (more performance then two 680's), and you already have them waterblocked too. You'll just be spending even more money if you sell the 7970's and then wait for the 680 waterblocks. Obviously keep the case too, and use the pump if you can. Why not seeing as it's NIB thumb.gif

Maybe keep the PSU as well? Why not..
You could keep the 680's for another build or for benching if you're not that concerned about gaining out of this.

EDIT: Yeah, with all of the profit grab a 3930k, obviously don't sell the motherboard as you won't make much in moving down to an extreme 6 or something.

EDIT2: Probably flog the RAM off and get something more mid-range, this will net you more profits and virtually the same perf.

I'd personally keep the Case Labs, Dom RAM, SSDs, 3 7970s, Extreme11 and LEPA and sell everything else and get a 3930K and water loop from hell.

This, maybe just a basic loop even? You can always net the profit. rolleyes.gif
