Sound Blaster or Integrated?

Thread Starter
I've got an old Sound Blaster Live! from a Dell I bought 5 years ago that I am not using. I am just using the integrated sound on my Mobo.
Anyone know if I would get a performance boost by using the old PCI card rather than the onboard deal?

i think you would get better performance. just because the card would be doing the processing not the cpu.

I have heard that, I wonder if the Live! series would make a difference. Guess the best way would be to stick it in and try it out.
I just bought a Sennheiser headset, so there is a whole new world of sound to me. I should just an X-Fi.

As a general rule of thumb, anything dedicated is better than anything on-board and this case holds no exceptions.

Get the dedicated sound card which will improve not only the overall sound of the music, but the FPS while gaming due to the card itself and the dedicated processing.

Good luck!

Read some of the answers here regarding onboard vs sb live. Link

Notably this:

No doubt, getting the X-Fi is the optimal choice as I know first hand. (Where I was in the exact same position as you are now.)
The performance and sound quality difference of the X-Fi is incredible.

It should perform better and your sound will most likely sound better too.

Most definitely. On paper X-fi, Audigy and some other cards look similar. But X-Fi's drivers simply blow them all out of the water.

an audigy 4 or audigy 2 zs will do the job too. I've had an x-fi platinum for a while, but the performance improvement didn't justify the price difference for me. so i took it back
