Upgrading from 670 FTW - 680 4gb or a Titan? - Page 2

If you have triple 1440p monitor setup in mind and you still want to play games on high to ultra settings you can forget about 2gb cards, they will choke at that kind of resolution with high level of detail, on the other hand a single Titan despite being a monster of a card with 6gb of vram is not powerful enough max all games at 7680x1440.

For that kind of resolution i'd think of these options:

2x gtx 670 4gb (~ $900)
2x GTX 680 4gb (~ $1060)
2x 7970 Toxic 6gb (~ $1140)
2x Titans ( $2K )

What games are you going to play?

add about $250 to all those price tags cuz they need to be waterblocked tongue.gif

What about a Titan with a 670 for physx? is there anything else I can do with the 670 2gb to help offset the load?

As for what games, you name it I will probably play it at some time. Looking forward to bf4 the most, but all games honestly. There was also a epic looking space sim that my brother was telling me about with a ridiculous amount of polys per ship that is in development. I am willing to spend a pretty penny on this upgrade (taking a little extra out for next year's student loan) so what would you suggest without doing something crazy like SLI titans... though I wouldn't be opposed to the idea of adding a second titan down the road in a year or so.

670 ftw for PhysX is a major overkill, i'd definitely just sell it and put money towards new sli setup. If BF series is a priority i think dual 680s 4gb would not be bad idea, as frostbite engine favors current nvidia architecture.

Otherwise just get a single titan now, and add second one later when u get those extra 2 screens smile.gif

Oh I know it's overkill, but I never really sell any of my stuff. Call me a hoarder, but I just can't bring myself to sell any hardware or games. Figured I would either give it to my little bro when I do my upgrade an save him some money when he rebuilds or I would just make it a dedicated physx card just to say I have a 670 for physx ha. Or may do a F@H rig when the new haswell chips are released and I upgrade.

Do you think 680s will out perform the titan? I figured a titan would be a little more future proofed too, but I may be completely wrong about that

that being said, I thought about the 7990s since I have heard really good things about them doing the higher resolutions well. Attributed that to the extra 1gb it has, though I could be wrong. how do you like your 7970 tho, have you x fired them?
So far I tried : 1 x 2560 x1440 27" with a single 7970 DC2T oc to 1200 core and was nice, then i went x 3 2560 x 1440 27's with 7970 xifre, and now I'm running 1 x 2560 x 1440 27" @ 100hz with 1x 7990 6gb, all setups were ok , but I feel satisfied with the last and current one, might try 2 more of those 27" 100hz screens one the reference 7990 comes out thumb.gif

Not to rain on your parade, but this is something you might want to be aware of: http://www.overclock.net/t/1380682/significant-issue-with-crossfire-to-be-aware-of/0_100

Because of this info, at this time I would not recommend the use of cards in CrossFire. There may be a driver "fix" for this issue, but it will likely add latency to regulate the output of the rendered frames on the software side of things. A truer fix will likely need to be implemented on the hardware side of things (that is, in later generations of AMD graphics cards). Apparently NVIDIA cards do currently use a form of hardware frame metering to help resolve these kinds of potential issues with their cards in SLI.

However, single GPU AMD cards are still a very viable option, and offer great performance for the price. Sadly, this excludes the 7990s as well.

...

I would go with 2 670s 4GB, 680s 4GB, or 1 Titan now to SLI with another Titan. I personally would pass on a single Titan as its price for performance really isn't worth it (in my opinion), and the other cards will generally outperform it.

If you're only going with a single GPU solution, then the Titan is the way to go if you have the funds for it. For cost effectiveness but lower performance, a single GPU AMD card would be the way to go.

^^^ these 680s are 2gb versions

But i'd still go with a titan because as you've said its more futureproof, in a sense that it gives you more space for improvement down the road. From what i read It also will provide the most consistent and smooth gameplay. And if you take that route just make your little brother happy and give him your 670 smile.gif

2x EVGA 680 4gb waterblocked - $1419.98

1x EVGA Titan waterblocked - $1219.99

these are the two setups I am looking at. so I guess the big question is; performance now, or performance later?
