Then bump this one once or twice per day. Try different times of day too. I know from experience on OCN that you can't expect replies to continue coming in if the thread hasn't seen replies for a couple of days. This is because it goes further and further down in the list and pretty soon it's no longer really noticed by anyone. So keep "bumping" it to the top every day, and again, try different times of day too. Just don't do it more than like 2 times per day because that can irritate certain people and moderators. lol I understand why though: doing it any more frequently than that is almost like trying to butt ahead in line.

It's a computer!

Well, what sort of things does the server need to do? Will it be running VMs or assisting in any cluster computing? Or is it mostly just a way to centralize file sharing/backup and projects between different machines?

If the former, I'd probably suggest an E3 or FX-8320 build, if the latter, probably an APU build. Cheap AMD FM2+ boards have up to 8 SATA ports. Might be handy.

When I think basic server machine I sort of gravitate towards something like the following:

Note: Both options below are totally and entirely overkill, but the way I see it, it'll be the last server the place buys for a decade or more, and if someone is going to take the TIME to piece it together and set it up, it may as well be with quality overkill stuff so that it pays back over the long haul with reliability and flexibility.

AMD option:

CPU: AMD A8-6500 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($104.99 @ Amazon)
Intel doesn't really offer the sort of enterprise class features of this chip until we get into $200+ territory. Probably unnecessary features for what this machine will do but it would make me feel better in the long haul as it would be more flexible.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-F2A88X-D3H ATX FM2+ Motherboard ($87.49 @ Newegg)
Full ATX for future expansion options. 8XSATA ports with RAID supported by the A88 chipset.

Memory: Kingston 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($75.99 @ Newegg)
A nice quality low voltage kit.

2X Storage: Western Digital BLACK SERIES 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (2 X $85 @ partpicks lowest)
FZEX is the single platter segue to enterprise class drives for consumers. I think it's probably a good fit here. Add more as needed. Buy 2 initially and configure in RAID1 for mirrored redundancy and better read performance.

Case: Fractal Design Define XL R2 (Black Pearl) ATX Full Tower Case ($109.99 @ Amazon)
Sound deadened full ATX enclosure with a look that basically screams "I'm a boring server leave me alone." Plenty of drive bays and room to haggle with it all comfortably.

Power Supply: SeaSonic S12G 650W 80+ Gold Certified ATX Power Supply ($96.50 @ Newegg)
10X SATA peripheral power connections. Among other things, (quality, overhead, etc)

Wired Network Adapter: Rosewill RNG-407-Dual 10/100/1000 Mbps PCI-Express x1 Network Adapter ($24.99 @ Newegg)
This may be unnecessary as you could just use the on-board, but configuring this as a combined link would effectively give the machine a 2Gbps connection to the wired network instead of 1Gbps.

Wireless Network Adapter: Intel 7260HMWDTX1 802.11a/b/g/n/ac PCI-Express x1 Wi-Fi Adapter ($46.99 @ Newegg)
Just guessing here to be honest. Not sure if you'll need Wifi on the server or not. There may be better products to choose from for this.

Total: ~$720 shipped

(Generated by PCPartPicker 2014-04-04 22:08 EDT-0400)

Intel Option (more of a "true" server class machine):

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1225 V3 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($221.98 @ SuperBiiz)
The entry CPU from Intel with server class features and an iGPU.

Motherboard: ASRock Rack C226 WS LGA1150 ($186.99 @ SuperBiiz)
10X SATA, ECC support, dual Ethernet. flexible iGPU pass-through connections. Great VRMs,

2 X Memory: Samsung DDR3-1333 4GB ECC/REG CL9 Server Memory (2 X $39.99)

2 X Storage: Western Digital BLACK SERIES 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive (2 X $85)

Case: Fractal Design Define XL R2 (Black Pearl) ATX Full Tower Case ($109.99 @ Amazon)

Power Supply: SeaSonic S12G 650W 80+ Gold Certified ATX Power Supply ($96.50 @ Newegg)

Wireless Network Adapter: Intel 7260HMWDTX1 802.11a/b/g/n/ac PCI-Express x1 Wi-Fi Adapter ($46.99 @ Newegg)

Total: ~$910 shipped

Yea almost everything listed there can be purchased from newegg except for the memory (use this X2 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820239692 ).

Problem is that newegg wants almost $100 more for the CPU. I don't know why. It's priced way over MSRP ($224) at newegg ($315?)

The case, power supply, hard drive, motherboard, memory (with change above) and wifi controller can all be purchased from newegg for near-enough to similar pricing that it shouldn't matter much, but man, that CPU. Wait for the E3-1245V3 to come back in stock if you're going to buy the CPU from newegg. For some reason they have it listed for less money, and it's a better CPU (hyperthreading enabled).

Since I am lazy/don't know what parts to pick for the server could anyone please link me to a build on newegg with the parts in links? If not that's fine but it would be much appreciated!

Just open the link to the PCpartpicker page, then click on the newegg link on that page for the product, it will take you directly to the product at newegg, then just add to cart.
