Is ips 120hz?

I need a new monitor for my upcoming build... I will have 2 7950s and want a 120HZ monitor. A Judy was telling me that a 3D monitor is 120HZ in 2D but 60 in 3d I don't understand how this works.... I want to play with 100+ FPS so yeah....
On 2d yeah its on 120 hz. When you enable 3d monitor you have 2 images of 60 fps to create the illusion of 3d.

Also all the 120hz monitor is tn panels. Except maybe some korean 1440p monitors

So will it be 120HZ if I just start it up and play a game? Or how does that work?
120hz in 2d. 3d is running the panel at 120hz also, but 3d divides each other frame to the opposite eye, so you actually see 2different frames, one to each eye. So in turn you only actually see 60hz(or 60fps)

All active 3d monitors are TN panels. There are some passive 3d monitors that are IPS, but they only go up to 60hz.

There are very few IPS monitors that can 120hz. One of them is the Overlord. http://overlordcomputer.com/

It will be 120hz all the time, even at desktop. As long as that is the mode you select.

Yeah there isn't actually a IPS panel that runs at 120Hz out of the box. Those Korean 27" panels can in some cases be overclocked to run at 100+Hz, but are standard at 60Hz.

As said above only the TN panels that can do 120Hz do that running 2D, or 60Hz per eye in 3D. Its just a drop down menu choice in the advanced settings and BAM, 120Hz refresh rate.

And it is so worth it... 120Hz vs 60Hz has a VERY noticable effect on smoothness, everything from gaming to just dragging a window around.

In most games I find there is a setting in the resolution that you have to select to make it run at 120fps, it usually shows the resolution and refresh rate, so in my case I choose 1920x1080@120Hz, and thats it. Game then runs at 120fps(if it can tongue.gif)

That is a passive 3d monitor. 60hz only in 2d.
