[PS4DAILY] PS4 developers have access to 7 GB RAM - Page 5

the other question is. If ports are amazing and an exact copy system yields the same result on peoples SFF HTPC from a cheap APU ( minus windows overhead) will there be any point to larger graphics cards / SLI / Crossfire / Titan type products anymore? sure the devs could use the extra power but they might mostly me happy with PC people finally getting perfect ports with HD textures and effects that used to require a top end card. PC people may want eyefinity and some extra mods but that might only need a $80 hybrid crossfire card to mix with the APU?

just a thought? a perfect port on a cheap APU doing KZ or Uncharted graphics will be something to see ! But then again with sony's tie in with Valve, and Valve's steam box linux OS using openGL like the playstation it might be only relevent to certain PC platforms?

interesting times smile.gif

sorry went off track...

I wonder what will be the weakest link hardware wise in the PS4, can't be the ram at the moment, maybe the CPU that's what's off putting to me when I look at it.

Now I know this dudes calculations were assuming scaling is 100 percent and are therefore very rough, but it could give you a general idea of the power that the processor has:

http://www.gamespot.com/users/ronvalencia/show_blog_entry.php?topic_id=m-100-26018589

So as you can see his calculations for jaguar at 1.6 ghz and 8 cores puts the processors multi threaded performance in between a i3 2100 (3.1ghz 2cores 4threads) and a q9600 (2.66ghz 4cores). One must also remember that this is a benchmark being run in windows ; there is probably still a little more performance to be squeezed out of it because of less overhead on the ps4. To add to this, an i3 2100 doesn't bottleneck a 7850 in most games (i think) so the cpu and gpu power should be well suited on the ps4.

Whether or not the cpu is considered weak is more or less subjective in a gaming console... and should not matter if the result is a product with great visuals and cool features.

-Architecture is based on Jaguar. If they chose low power parts, it has to mean something. Sony has traditionally used state-of-the-art, expensive processors in their machines.

-Uses a LOT of high speed memory. And apparently, fully coherent since they share the very same space. Or at least, if not fully coherent, the IMC does a hell of a job at sorting it for the rest of the hardware. Nevertheless, it is a shared space of the very same kind of memory for all main devices, so even if it isn't fully coherent as of now, I'm certain that it can be later on, when it is more mature.

-Uses an all AMD platform. Curiously, no Intel or Nvidia. Who, besides what media or they CEOs say, are not part of the HSA foundation. This might have meant more than we think on Sony and Microsoft's decision to adopt them as a designer for their SoCs.

This is great news for AMD.

This is huge for AMD, it means that games will most likely have HSA implementations. Meaning that maybe a Steamroller quad core APU could overtake Haswell'ts i7 in performance due to HSA in gaming.

Yeah i think its great for us too. You can see that everyone move to adopt HSA. Intel have like L4 cache on haswell? I can see that amd is going big right now. Especially with the agressive marketing this year.Never settle bundles with almost all the AAA titles, all the consoles, tablets and the big partners on HSA. You can see easily that amd feels confident. After the bd flop they dont afraid to claim 30%+ performance for SR.

Oh nice find thanks!, It's still not spectacular or ground breaking technology but It's pretty nice and should be fine.

That is decent enough amount of RAM in there, considering it's GDDR5. It will be good also for PC gaming, as it will (probably) mean, that at last games will move away from being the-lowest-common-denominator off 32 bit and limited to only 3.5 GB of RAM. Especially the modded games tend, in my experience, bounce against that RAM limit. Even as old games as Viv IV Rise of Mankind mod, for example.

you don't need HD textures to make any game look good , a lot of tricks are available to do that just for the sake of saving memory for other things

This post makes no sense.. General purpose CPU use is some of the least demanding. There are some specific applications out there for sure but 90% of CPU horsepower is not used in almost every none gaming app.

As for it being weak, sure weak compared to more expensive parts but then again most of the people here are hardware snobs.

with multi layer blu ray capacity for ROM this should definitly last 6 years as a gaming machine.

Does that incur a lot of latency between your system RAM and iGPU?

This is one heck of an upgrade for the next gen consoles. PS3 only had 256mb of system RAM, and 256mb of Vram, while the xbox 360's pooled all of its 512mb Ram together. It's pretty crazy to think that these games on current gen consoles are doing so much, with SOOOOOOO little. Console gamers are in for a treat
