Worth upgrading to Powerdirector 11?

Thread Starter
So i have been using Powerdirector 9 ever since it came out and have been very happy with it its easy to use so i really like it

The problem is the Powerdirector 9 is a little slow and i have tried the demo version of Powerdirector 11 but it would keep crashing so what i am asking is sould i buy the full version of Powerdirector 11 and donwload the patches and hope it works or just stick to Powerdirector 9 which i know for sure works

Thanks

I would hit up the developer and ask why it is crashing... You may find that even with the updates it still crashes. May be something else going on. Who is to say that there are updates on the full version that are not in the trial? Usually trials are completely up to date and a lot of software out there the trial is actually the full version just not registered and with a time out or restrictions but usually can be unlocked into full version without re-downloading. Not sure if that is the case with 11 though.

Also as far as I know Powerdirector 11 is not faster than 10 or 9.

It claims that it is but you have to read the fine print. It compares 10 w a CPU and GPU to 11 with a CPU and multiple GPUs

Do you have multiple GPUs?

Are you aware that using a GPU to encode your videos may come at the expensive of video quality? In some cases a huge expense.

Don't use your video card to increase the encode speed. Only use your CPU and I wouldn't even use quicksync. Quicksync is fine for video conferencing or maybe encoding video games while you are playing them for the few that can get quicksync to work with a game recorder but as for encoding HD stuff that you want to look good just use the CPU.

Stick with 9 unless you have money rolling out of your ears.

I tried the demo version of version 11 without patches and i found it to be much faster then version 9 there is also better and more media types to pick in version 11

Why it crashed i dont know could be it was without patches version 9 works fine tried version 10 it was unstable as hell so i skipped it then i tried version 11 it was a little be more stable but not much

Both version 10 and 11 i tried was without patches and both where unstable as hell but both where much faster

Its 72 euros for the Ultra version of Powerdirector 11 am not going to spend it if its just as unstable as the version i tried

And yes on monday i get my second Asus GTX 680 CU II 4 GB card so i will be running SLI from next week

Did you read the part about not using GPU encoding? Just google it. If you feel that the issues with GPU encoding are unimportant to you and your source material then by all means.

If 11 is considerably faster in CPU only mode then that is awesome but I think you are comparing GPU to CPU only and that is a HUGE HUGE difference in speed but it comes at a cost that they don't discuss.

If you already purchased the software let us know if that fixed your stability issues.

Also please read some of the info available on GPU encoding.

Here is some stuff available and a quote.

A good quote is from mediacoder

An approach for improving GPU encoding quality has been done in 0.8.18.5450. A high quality and high performance temporal denoiser is implemented and automatically activated when encoding with GPU. This will not improve SSIM but the pre-processing will make up for the shortage of all GPU encoders (Intel MSDK and CUDA) and improve perceptual visual quality of the encoded content. As the denoiser is working fully parallel to decoding and encoding, there is very little performance overhead.

With this improvement, GPU encoding quality is now generally acceptable, especially for playback on mobile screens, and more specifically, 1.5Mbps video encoded by CUDA encoder looks quite good on iPhone screen.

In other words they are saying you can finally use GPU encoding if it is at a low quality it shouldn't be that bad (at least that is how I read it) that is a fairly new update (jan 2013)

I would def want to know how powerdirector gets around the issues present in GPU encoding...

Here is some more info

The wretched state of GPU transcoding

Your graphics card sucks at making video (properly named lol but more specific to using xsplit)

For me even if I can't tell the difference (which I can) it isn't worth the chance of it screwing stuff up and it isn't worth going through final output with a fine tooth comb to ensure it is good. Completely makes the time saved pointless. Now if the quality doesn't matter then heck yeh it saves time but do you need to save that time? I usually let big jobs go overnight or while I will be away from the computer.

Not sure if powerdirector would take advantage of this or not but if it did I think a better upgrade would be an 8 core AMD instead of the software and another GPU.

But if you are absolutely set on GPU encoding then Powerdirector 11 is a must since 10 doesn't even support SLI.

I do a very niche job encoding and broadcasting video for surgical procedures, company kickoffs, and video blogs that have a studio guest (Dr or professional) where the studio will re-use the source to make educational DVDs etc.

We have seriously considered GPU encoding and even made sure we purchased laptops (can't use desktops for this job) that had quicksync and the ability to run external pro video cards and we completely gave up on it because the only time the quality was acceptable was in low bitrate encodes for internet broadcast and external machines already exist that handle that quite well with redundancy.

At this time I just cant think of a use for GPU encoding where as anytime the video is of high enough quality to benefit from faster encoding that higher quality is damaged by the GPU encoding.

Some day we hope... as for on the fly high res (not high def) the machines we use cost more than any other gear we own and use expensive gear to down sample HD if that is what the source is (usually not but sometimes).

I know this isn't exactly what you are doing but if the quality matters to you then that wretched state of gpu encoding is a must read.
