What next?

Hi

I am learning to OC and would like some pointers. I can seem to get me QX6700 past 3.33ghz.

I have got the fsb @ 277 and the multi @ 12 to give 3.33ghz. The voltages are stock.

If I go higher with the FSB it wont boot, windows starts then crashes. I can take the multi down a bit, and then up the FSB, and this is think runs a bit cooler, but then when I up the multi again, wont boot.

But I am now running @ 40c, up from 31c @ 2.66ghz - I know nothing, but that seems like quite a big jump?

I feel that I should be able to get this higher, and at a cooler temp, can I have some pointers please?

Sure thing boss. First off, the jump in temps is completely normal. Higher clocks = higher temps. Only way to lower those is to increase airflow in the case, or go to a different type of cooling, water, phase, etc. The wall you are currently hitting is your CPU. It does not have enough voltage to run at anything higher. You will need to increase the voltage to the CPU in the bios. Take it up slowly, and try to boot into windows. If it doesnt work, again go up, and try again. Sooner then later it will work. So long as you make sure your temps at load dont go any higher then 55 in TaT you will be ok. Make sure to test with Orthos (I linked it in that other thread for you!)

Ok, I have looked at the voltages in the BIOS, but want to double check before I change anything. Which Voltage should I be changing as there is 2 for CPU, FSB and Core. Do they both need to come up together, or do I just change one?

Also, what sort of jumps in voltage should I be trying, and how high do I take it before you try a different approach?

I would imagine you have already solved this, however, if not here is your answer. The "core" voltage is what you need to be increasing. You will only need to increase that one more then likely, at least, at the moment. The FSB actually overvolts the NB so that the motherboard can attain higher stable FSB speeds. Obviously with your high multi this is currently not needed.

When you raise the voltage I suggest raising it only one or two steps up at a time, and testing after each raise. That way when it works you have very little fine tuning to do, or none at all.

Depending on your ram timings and how you have your ram set up, raising the FSB, and raising the voltage to the CPU core accordingly will allow you a very nice OC. Just make sure your ram is running "in sync" with your FSB (1:1). I have had afew issues with running it out of sink, or using the independent ram speed feature on the 680i. That being said, none of the issues I saw where huge, so if you want you can give it a shot. I have heard running the ram independently does allow for a marginal increase in overall system speed.
