Need advice for GTX680 on my PC

Thread Starter
Hi Friends,

I have a 5year old PC with specs as given below:-

CPU : E6750 Core2 2.66
Mobo : nVidia 650i
RAM : 2GB Transcend
Graphics Card : HD4890 Radeon
HDD : Regular Seagate 500GB
PSU : CoolerMaster Real Power Pro 520Wt

This PC was doing very well all these years but now its graphics card got some memory issues and its not working for more than 5 minutes after turning on the PC. It is out of warranty also.

Now I need to know whether a GTX 680 would work on this PC or not? It has only 520wt of PSU and I dont want any other older components like CPU or Motherboard to be a bottleneck in overall gaming performance.

In case a 680 works on this PC, I can extend its life for some more time. Otherwise I will have to fit a lower end card in this system and get a new machine with i7, SSD, GTX 680 etc for gaming.

Please advice! Thanks!

It would work but the CPU would massively bottleneck a 680, ideally you need a decent quad core.

I suspected that. Can you suggest some other decent card that would work with is PC?

Perhaps a GTX 660?

A GTX 680 would still probably work with your power supply but as the guy above me said, your processor isn't good enough to let your experience your GTX 680 to it's full potential.

What I would do is get a 7950 instead, if you clock it to around 1200Mhz, you'll match or beat a GTX 680 at stock in most games, they retail for around $300 or so normally and come with Bioshock Infinite and Tomb Raider for free, if I were in your situation, I would sell the games that come with the GPU for $50 each, then use the money you saved from buying a GTX 680 and spend it on a new motherboard and processor. thumb.gif

Or you could get a voltage unlocked 7850 if you want something in the $200 range, sell the two games that come with it for $50 each, then overclock it and you'll reach 7870 ish levels and match/destroy a GTX 660 in most if not all games and spend the rest of your budget on a new motherboard and CPU. thumb.gif

which country are you from ? a HD 7850 2GB should be enough. with overclocking will double your current card's performance.

I will second the 7850. It wont bottleneck nearly as bad as a high end card and will still give you great performance.

I am from India, Delhi. I doubt a 7950 will also fail to work well with this CPU.

So far via 4890 I was able to play far cry 3 but I need something that can run latest games also with decent frame rates. I dont need to max out the settings. I generally keep antialiasing off and increase other settings.

How about a 650? Will it work well with bioshock infinite, resident evil and crysis3?
