Ceton InfiniTV4 Adventure & Survival Guide

I've decided to embark on a journey to setup my Ceton InfiniTV 4 in my rig. I already have a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2250 dual tuner set up to work with MCE using the clear QAM channels. That has been working well enough so decided to incorporate the encrypted channels too using a cable card.
The journey started off easy enough with plopping in the card and installing the drivers. MCE recognized the card and was ready to set up. I went to go the the digital TV setup as per the setup instructions. Just before I went to continue with the digital TV setup MCE changed the dialogue window saying a new tuner was detected and asked if I wanted to configure it.. This, however, was a trap. I hit OK and proceeded to configure the card, then got an error message saying the system was not compatible with a cable card. The reason for this error was because I configured the card BEFORE running the digital TV setup. The only way to correct the problem was to reset the card, reboot and try again. OK, so I went through this setup again and the card appeared ready for pairing. I called Comcast to get everything set up. They sent a signal but they did not get a confirmation that communication with the card was successful. I rewired my entire setup so the cable TV coax was going straight through to the tuner, but still no luck. While trying to diagnose the problem, the tuner card then disappeared from the device manager entirely. So, I re-seated the card, re-installed the drivers and tried again. I called Comcast again and attempted the pairing process. I had the Ceton diagnostic utility running while the Comcast person sent the signal to hit the card. The utility manager recognized the hit, but the Comcast person said they were not getting confirmation, likely because of some sort of connection problem on my end. I told her that I received the hit and that confirmation was not necessary because the Ceton card only works 1 way (thus why OnDemand won't work with the card) She said that she needed the confirmation of the hit otherwise it wouldn't work. I tried to prove her wrong on the phone, but when I went back into MCE to finish setting up the card, I got the digital TV activation page. I hit OK and waited for the activation to go through. No luck. Eventually the screen just went blank and I had to restart. Long story short, MCE must be in WINDOWED mode for the digital TV activation to go through. It can't be done in full screen mode for some mysterious nonsensical reason. Tried again in windowed mode and got a little bit farther but eventually the setup failed after digital TV activation. The problem was that once again the Ceton card mysteriously disappeared from the system. Now, I'm starting to get a bit annoyed at the process. Anyway, later that night I tried updating the firmware version on the card. I didn't have high hopes that this would make much of a difference, but I actually made it all the way through the setup process. Finally, everything was showing up fine in MCE. Well, almost anything. HBO isn't coming in for some reason, even though its showing up through the STB. Just one more call to Comcast should hopefully resolve this, but I'll need a stiff drink before dealing with them again. I've also noticed the video quality is not as good as the STB and there is a very slight audio sync issue.

In summary here is what needs to be done to make sure the Ceton card works:

1) UPDATE firmware and hardware version on card first

2) Make sure to run digital TV assistant BEFORE letting MCE configure the new tuner.

3) Digital TV activation must be run with MCE in WINDOWED mode, not full screen

4) Your cable card may receive a hit from the cable provider even if they tell you the hit didn't go through. Use the diagnostic utility to confirm the hit. Don't take the word of the technician.

5) Verify that your gfx card and monitor are HDCP compliant.

Wall of text!

I too have the InfiniTV4, it's great when it works (which is 90% of the time), but it has run into seemingly random problems where it just stops working. It's happened about 3 times since I've owned it over the last year and a half. Ceton customer support is great though, fixed the problems pretty quick.

I do plan to ditch cable/satellite and move over to Netflix/Hulu/Over the Air after the cable contract expires.

Ceton recommended a couple of hot fixes for Win and to turn off power savings for PCIe. Will see how much this helps. I do seem to have a problem with the card staying secure in the PCIe x1 slot

My Ceton card had temp issues, and Ceton diagnostic would commonly show 63 degrees C. When recording multiple channels it would hit 70 degrees. About two to three times a week it would lock up and require a reboot. I zip tied an small copper heat sink to it, and placed a slow spinning fan pointing at it, and now it runs at 39 to 41 while recording 4 HD channels. Its on 24/7 and rock solid. I actually am looking to add another, and will have to figure out how to arrange the fan. I totally love this card.

Thanks for the heads up on that. My Ceton card is one slot over from the GPU so I may have to move it to keep it cooler. It's in the only free x1 slot though

I'm wondering if a PCI slot fan would be helpful in keeping this card cool.

If you have the space to spare, I think it is a great ideal.

I got the recently released 6 tuner card and installed it in a WHS 2011 server. Card is networked and works really well, except that WHS doesn't know how to deal with a bridged connection and kills the remote access features. Not a huge deal to me, but the installation went pretty easy following some online instructions.

If anyone could offer advice as to maybe a different way to enable the remote access, I'd be yer best bud.
