[CS] IBM’s Billion Dollar Bet - Page 2

Before this can happen, the dollar/GB ratio on SSDs needs to drop dramatically. This is the reason I refuse to buy one. Not enough space for my money.

Here's an example: Rambus

Last time their products were actually used was way back in early 2000s. Sucks to be the investors that were stuck with the losing horse.

As of now for consumers, it's good enough as a boot drive and perhaps hold a few frequently used programs.

To be able to store movies, music and adult content pictures... Which is probably never for a SSD in a limited budget, as HDDs will obviously always be the better choice.

This has actually been done!

... Off to find the article. It was in the news last year - something about a silicate? Possibly Germanium?

Well, since flash storage is used exclusively in all smartphones and tablets, many of which are entirely replacing your typical laptop/desktop for general consumers, I'd say it's a pretty safe bet...

If this is true, great. Smaller computers will have the same amount of space a large computers would have now. thumb.gif

In for instant boot times. I'd say it was a good bet. Time will tell. Perhaps fiber optics are the next thing in storage, who knows?

It will get even better. Currently the Price/GB is WAY better than the SSD I got 18 months ago.

It used to be $2/GB and ALOT more before. Now it's under $1/GB

Can somebody explain to me why we don't use RAM memory but with a power source attached (A battery) so that the data is retained upon shutdown?
Is it that to provide the power to retain the data in the RAM would be too high for a battery to provide for long periods of time?

It is really, since if it goes poop down the road for them in doing this, then yes they will lose the bet.
