Overclocking the FX-8350

Thread Starter
Hello community , i recently builded my new system and and 2 days now im in an overclock route,

So far im at 4.6ghz stable while im still running the OCCT but im awared of my temps, 65c max i reached according to core temp.

My cooler is Noctua nh-d14 , fans running at full rpm.

Im kinda upset with these temps as its been reported by many forums even reviews that this air cooler competes the h100 from corsair, maybe any suggestions ? when i applied the thermal compound i added 1-2 size of rice in the middle of the cpu cores surface and i maded sure that i rolled the screws in the mounting kit and the cooler very very tight.

Thanks in advance.

Hey man thanks for replying smile.gif

Im so upset i had to lower even more the speeds, now im at 4.5ghz with 1.452vcore, i dont know what im doing wrong here,

i got like one of the best air coolers in the market and i get tose temps, im really upset and i dont know what to do for real.

Im stable at 4.5ghz but so much celsius and i even pass the 62c suggested from AMD engineerers.

Most of the reviews that compare coolers are done using Intel cpu's. The Vishera is much different than the Intel's that I have when it comes to trying to cool them. This, and the fact that some people claim to get 5 ghz on air with the Vish when all they really do at that speed is snap a cpuz validation misleads a lot of people into thinking the big air coolers are better than they really are. It's my belief that the best air cooler in the perfect situation will still limit the 8350 to 4.7 or 4.8 ghz when stress testing using all 8 cores.
Here is a picture of one of my 8350s running prime at 4.6 ghz. I had been priming for a couple hours working up from stock speeds when I took this screen shot. The coolant was saturated with heat from the previous runs, so even though that particular run wasn't for very long , the temps reflect a much longer prime run. The cooler on that rig is a thermaltake water 2.0 extreme AIO with fans set up in push pull. The fan/pump settings were in silent mode at time I was doing this test.

What kind of ambient?

A lot of people tend to be a bit overly enthusiastic about that cooler..

Might be bad internal air flow. No matter how good the cooler is, if the environment is bad, its performance will be bad.

I can pass prime at less voltage with mine at that speed. Can you drop it a bit and still be stable? Also what is your cpu/nb voltage? My asus cranks 1.4 volts through there unless i back it off ( usually 1.25 will still be fine) What LLC level are you using?

Here's a screenshot from a prime run a little later with the same rig at faster speeds and higher voltage.EDIT: I had bumped up the settings to extreme on the water loop for this one Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

The cooler you have is a great HSF . They are very popular and you would have no problem selling it if that's what you wish to do. In my opinion you would have to have a 240 mm radiator to cool significantly better than it does.
I would check your settings again, backing off voltages where you can. I really think you should be able to go a little higher before hitting the thermal limit.
As swishamane mentioned, make sure you give it the best environment you can by properly managing your airflow within the case. This is equally true if you have a watercooling setup.

Also, prime 95 is particularly troublesome for the 8 core Vishera's . Most of the guys in the Vishera club prefer to use IBT or OCCT to stress test for that reason.

My LLC are settings are on Extreme, the CPU/NB volt is set to auto the only voltage i have adjust is the memory to 1.65 and the core to 1.437 and the motherboard itself chooses to raise it to 1.452v sometimes, but mostly it is 1.440v.

Im not sure about the air flow, i have 2 fans that pushes fresh air and 2 that pulls, the ones that pushes are in the bottom side of the case and the ones that pulls are in the top side and in the back side where the noctua pushes the hot air, so the hot air goes out of the case i believe.
