Would going from an AMD 8120 to an i7 950 (and overclocking the hell out of it) be an upgrade?

Hello,

I am currently running an 8120 at a modest 4 ghz OC on air.

I came into a rampage 3 extreme mobo from a friend with an i7 950, and am looking to overclock and watercool this next build I'm making.

Anyone know if going from the 8120 to the 950 would be an upgrade, or a downgrade and I should just stick with my 8120 for now?

Thanks!
In my opinon, it would be a sidegrade. You would probably see higher benchmarks with the i7, but honestly in day to day use, you wont see any difference in performance.. The 8120 is fast enough. The i7 will just be faster. You most likely wont see anything being more snappy on the desktop though. So its up to you. If you can get / have the i7 for free, take it. Although i wouldnt spend more than 100 dollars to get it.

It is a nice jump in performance..

Most of all in the Gaming dept.

Rampage 3 extreme is a very nice board..

My old system was a Rampage 3 extreme + i7 930.. i very much so enjoyed the system.

Yeah I have it for free thanks to my buddy.

Mm, I guess the only thing I need to do is get used to older non-UEFI BIOS (I know I'm spoiled tongue.gif )

You won't notice it much day to day use but its a monster of an upgrade when it comes to gaming performance.

You never know man ... it is faster than a 3470 ... and probably more at 3.6GHz

Stick with FX 8120 and wait for Steamroller, if you can't wait at least wait for Piledriver refresh... The refresh will have Piledriver+ cores, if you wait for steamroller you will have 45-50% over Bulldozer or you could right now get FX 8350 and have 15% of improvements while the refreshed lineup will have 20% of improvements over your Bulldozer.

If you go and buy i7 950 your costs will be somewhat high since you will need a newer motherboard and power consumption would be slightly lower. Its more affordable to buy FX 8350 and you will have identical performance as i7 950. You can sold your FX 8120 and get FX 8350 that is 200$ or get FX 8320 and overclock it to FX 8350 level.

Upgrading is cheaper than buying a CPU and a Mobo.
