so his friend is giving him away the motherboard and processor? Oh then its an modest upgrade, even thought he could sell it both FX 8120 and i7 950+Mobo and buy FX 8350 and Indigo Extreme, you could sell your cooler for FX 8120 and buy from Phanteks that costs 75$ on amazon and hit with your FX 8350 5Ghz on air biggrin.gif

I don't ... see the point in that.

Have you ever used Indigo Extreme? It is one of the most If not the most expensive and the hardest to apply "paste" to use. I would never recommend it unless you have 30+ dollars to blow just in case you mess up your first application.

OT: I would sell the AMD system and see what Haswell/Steamroller would have in store to see if its even that significant of an upgrade from a 950
Small wonder.

for gaming it would be an upgrade. depending on which games you play, and what gpu you're pairing it with you may notice a difference in gaming.

if you were spending money an 8320/3570 would be an upgrade.

if it were me i'd wait it out for steamroller and use the i7950 for a linux box/ folding thumb.gif

Well he then could be in 5Ghz club... Just suggesting or he could get i7 3770k if he wants to spend extra cash.

Do you know how 5Ghz FX 8350 would compare to i5 3570k and i7 3770k?

edit:
KuuFA, I plan to go hardcore when I get enough cash devil.gif

Anyway he has already an AM3+ motherboard, right? So he could sell i7 950 and that motherboard and get FX 8350 that is better and single threading performance is comparable, i7 950 is a bit better in single threading but its only 1-2%

Gets destroyed by a 5ghz 3570k and blown off the face of the planet by a 5ghz 3770k

I'll be running the rig with triple SLI 580's (again, these I have already, it's not a matter of spending more money)

Sorry, I didn't intend to start an AMD-vs-Intel fight in here or anything .

Thanks for all the discussion everyone.

I guess I'll see where it takes me once I set up the rig sometime this week as the consensus seems to be that it'd at least own my 8120 once overclocked, and I guess I'll see how big of an improvement Haswell will be once it comes out.

the 8350 is better in everyway, single threaded performance is almost identical.
all this 'us vs them' intel vs amd bashing gets really old.

Thanks for that post.

I wonder if it'll make a huge difference though in regard to that once I clock the 950 as high as possible?

I'll be started it off on air, but moving to water in a few weeks-months smile.gif

while being clocked almost 1ghz higher. I would like to see how it would do against the 950 at a modest 3.5 or even at the same clocks.

While the 8350's are not that "bad" of a cpu by today's standards. They just don't compete with the i7's of old and even today's

for gaming you will likely notice a difference, especially with 3 580s. i don't have any experience overclocking lga 1366, but getting it to 4-4.2ghz is probably somewhere in the ball park of an 8120 @ 4.8ghz for gaming.
