Boot device

Thread Starter
I went into my BIOS and set the first boot device to be the CD-ROM where my windows CD was, but I still get the message "reboot and select proper boot device." when trying to setup windows.

Did I forget to do something?

Did you forget to put the CD in?

Maybe the CD-ROM is broken?

I have the CD in there, and I already re-checked all the wires to the CD-ROM and it looks fine. The CD-ROM takes the disk and the light blinks like its reading it but when I press a key to make the computer continue it just brings back the message "Reboot and select proper boot device."

Try another optical drive. I've had 2 CD-ROM gone bad, it looked like they were working but they never red the media so to the garbage they went.

Do you have more than one cd/dvd drive? Make sure you have the correct one selected. Usually you can chose not only whether to boot from cd or hdd or whatever, but from which one as well, if say you have more than one hdd, or mutiple cd/dvd drives. Are you actually seeing the message "press any key to boot from cd"? If you're not seeing this, then it's not seeing the disc in that drive, or it's not even looking for it in that drive. If you're sure you have the settings right, then try another cd/dvd drive.

I only have one CD-ROM and it was found in my BIOS so I set it to the first priority in the boot setup, its not reading it I guess. When I press F8 in the beginning it asks what device to use and only the HDD comes up as a selectable device.

Try cleaning the rubber tire inside the drive that turns the disc. I've fixed quite a few bad drives just by cleaning them. Open the cd drive tray then shut down the computer. Then you can move the tray yourself, to get a good angle on the rubber tire with a q-tip and a little alcohol, and you'll need a flashlight. The other way is to take apart the casing of the drive, then cleaning the rubber tire and lens (be very careful with lens) is easy, if you wanna do it that way. I've seen many times that the rubber is just dirty, and it's not spinning the disc properly. Otherwise it's toast maybe, and try another drive I guess.

He said the bios sees it though, so I don't know. I'm not quite sure how the F8 menu works in regards to this, does CD/DVD drive show in that list, only when a bootable disc is actually detected in the drive? Or will the drive show anyway even with no disc? Never paid much attention when I've done it.
