[HEXUS] Crytek CEO says games are 60% Graphics - Page 7

Aesthetics are fairly important to me. Graphics, much less so. An interesting art direction/well executed style will still look gorgeous decades after the uninspired, technically impressive titles have shown their age. The Wind Waker, Skyward Sword, Okami, Dragon Quest VIII, countless 8 and 16-bit games are more enjoyable to look at than Battlefield 3, Crysis, Metro and so on.

Still, being pretty isn't enough to make me play an otherwise poor game, and it sure doesn't factor into why I'm playing good ones. Not even a good story does that very often. There's also a big difference between playing games because they're pretty and simply making your games look nicer (i.e. buying more powerful hardware/consoles). I do the latter not because it's vital to my experience, but simply because the options are there.
I think his statement was a little broad. I think graphics matters in different genres of games. Anything 1st or 3rd person should have awesome graphics and awesome gameplay to be considered a good game. Immersion is everything to me. If I can't feel apart of the world I don't bother; this starts with graphics. I prefer RPGs BTW. If a PC game is an RPG and doesn't offer immersion, the devs have failed.

would it sell that good if it was $60? I mean, how much more difficult was it to make than Crysis 3? Heck, why don't we all go play Farmville? It's like @40,000,000. Personally I think it's preference; some people have very simple entertainment requirements and there is nothing wrong with that. But it shouldn't be a determining factor. An example would be Firefly. I loved that show, but Keeping up with the Kardashians had way more ratings. Are we now suppose to use that analogy to determine what the future holds for games? Oh I know I know wheee.gif , I should go and trade my '04 M3 for a shiny new Prius biggrin.gif

This guy is a moron, and shouldn't be running any sort of company with such an arrogant attitude.

Might as well have said "Consumers will buy any turd we put out as long as its shiny and pretty. Simple fools!" rolleyes.gif

It's Crytek, what else are they going to say? It's not like they can make a game with a good story, and they've only ever managed about half a game's worth of good gameplay (first half of Crysis 1, and even then...), and that was before EA stuck their fingers in the pie.

Crytek can only do graphics, so of course they think that graphics are all important.

Minecraft is addicting, Crysis is not, You can play Minecraft longer, Crsysis requires a tank to run which i bet no more then 20 million people around the world dont have while MC is easy to run, Crysis is more expensive.

I'm going to make one last post, cause I don't think people have actually grasped the idea. If graphics didn't matter, we would be playing Half Life 1. You want to play Half Life 1 and pay $60 today? No, you don't. That amount of material, content, story, mechanics, everything was done years ago. We would top out at low end DX9 hardware if people didn't care. The fact is, we do care and it drives the industry on a constant basis. What made FF so amazing? It's story, as well as it's superb graphics. I remember the shock and awe stories about FF cut scenes.

The hard truth, we are a visual species. We rely on sight more than any other stimuli (unless you are handicapped). That's the truth, their is nothing else that is going to change that. Mechanics, how the game plays, is an extension of visual fidelity. Fact is, in order to play a game most people require you to see it. SEE IT! What was that? Can you really enjoy playing most modern video games by just hearing them? You typically can't feel them, so what other sense is their to stimulate? Oh, that's right, the visual cortex in the back of your brain.

So if you think visual stimulation isn't important, quit being naive. Or more to the point, quit being ignorantly naive. Certain game styles will never require graphics, story based games will more than likely always require visual fidelity to keep up with the market. That's just the game we play folks.

This dude gets it (Id like pics of that M3 btw)

And graphics doesnt mean photo-realism, its the visual style of the game. Some people are saying Borderlands 2 is an example of a good game with bad graphics, really? The cellshaded style has a lot to do with the appeal of the game. Also most of those games that have bad graphics are so successful because they are ACCESSIBLE. If every person in the world had a gtx 680, im sure many more people will turn to the more visually appealing games. And to the people that go play classics, its because of nostalgia, and I bet that when you guys played them back in the day the graphics were great. I have wanted to try many of these classics, but since I dont have any prior nostalgia associated with them, I find it hard to tolerate them because of their bad graphics. And for a game to come out and have crappy graphics and visual style today, and be successful, it has to be very easily accessible, or have the best god damn gameplay ANYONE has ever seen.

I agree, though i'd understand why some people wouldn't. It really does depend on the person. It's not a one size fits all affair.

Great graphics are usually the tipping point for whether i buy a game or not (though if it does have excellent game play and story then i go for that as well). It's why i have a PC worth more than a thousand bucks which i keep adding money to every year instead of a $300 console....
