I like the idea of "plug-in" hybrids and using solar panels on top of your garage.

When the shift to electric cars goes wide open, electricity prices are going to skyrocket.

We dont even have the infrastructure to support this yet. 90% of American homes use 200AMP service. "Fast" chargers for e-cars usually require 80+ AMP dedicated circuits. Now imagine every home in your neighborhood pulling 80 more amps than usual every night of the week. Time for infrastructure upgrades, expensive ones.

These batteries are cool though. Would immensely increase the range of current e-cars.

I certainly won't be giving up gasoline driven cars, nothing can replace eight cylinders rumbling like a caged aninal waiting to be unleashed. Electric vehicles last time I checked caused more pollution anyway because of the manufacturing process involved and the short life of said batteries. Although I'd imagine some of the processes have changed in manufacturing, it doesn't change the fact batteries don't last. Most people opt to purchase a new car once one goes bad, completely negating the pollution prevention to begin with.

So you can skip me, I'll keep my oil thirsty truck.

We need to move past lithium. It's not nearly as abundant as we may think nor is it sustainable in the least bit. Besides, a great deal of lithium comes from iraq, iran, saudi arabia etc.. which puts a huge need on imports from countries that have a faltered relationship. Anyway, /political rant.

Interesting read, they talked alot about the technology though they didn't mention any actual numbers about how much power and energy these can deliver.

Would be great to have my pc running in a van going to LAN parties not caring about energy.

It still comes from the plug which mostly comes from fossil fuel power stations (depending where you live). Its a step in the right direction but not the solution.

I wonder why people think that with advancements in smaller batteries, the technology for charging/powerplants would stay the same...If there is a demand for the electricity because of super efficient batteries, then people will find a way to make more efficient power plants. Plus, if the batteries are more efficient, you wouldn't need as much electricity...

I don't understand everyone's issue with electric cars. Energy is energy. Using electricity instead of gas as the last-point fuel form for automobiles simply means more options.

It doesn't magically remove the option of burning gas, the gas will just get burned more efficiently at a power plant rather than inside your car's inferior engine. And when gas is no longer available, your car will still freaking work instead of being an obsolete piece of junk.

Yeah, your electric bill might increase, but your gasoline bill will decrease even more.

Come on people, use your heads. The only downside currently is lack of widespread support, which is entirely due to lack of widespread adoption. Sooner you luddites get over your fear of change, the sooner you'll be paying less for fuel to drive your quieter, cheaper, safer, and more environmentally friendly cars (and if at least one of those points doesn't appeal to you, you probably need to reevaluate your priorities).

Never mind the fact that these batteries apply to more than just cars and everyone here seems to be missing the obvious application (mobile digital devices and UPSs).
