New to OC, trying to get advice on a computer project.

Hello everyone! ^_^ I've been to Overclock.net for a few answers I've been looking for before, but now that I'm working on my own projects I guess I should go and ask it myself.

So I've been working on this idea in my mind, but I've no idea how to do it since it's my first real project. I'm going to be gearing up to build my next new computer.
I want to take a donor bed like the ones they have at plasma donation places (Meant for sitting in for long periods of time. It's more like a recliner but they call it a bed) and build a computer into the cubby under the seat, which is in volume greater than a normal computer case. I'd have to do modifications to improve air flow I think, but it should be all right. I am hoping to use a boom arm to have the monitor and keyboard+Trackball be out of the way until you sit in the chair and then swing them into reach. I'd also be connecting the speakers into the chair and a USB hub so that other peripherals like webcam can be plugged in on the fly too.

Anyone ever try doing it like this?
I could really use some advice on building a computer into a piece of furniture. I'm not new to building a PC, but I am new to building it into something. I'm trying to get away from the desk style of computing; instead pursuing something I thought would be comfortable and ergonomic to spend long hours on. (I'm a writer/gamer, so I want as much immersion as I can get)

Please let me know if you need to know anything. I have access to some basic crafting tools like a workshop for wood, and plenty of computer tools/components. I don't have the seat yet (looking for a good deal on one at the moment) but I will before I start working on the project.

This made me instantly think of Grandma's Boy....

I think that would be an awesome/terrible idea. Awesome for being pure awesomeness, terrible since if I had one I would never get up from it and be plugged in 24/7 tongue.gif /jk

It would be best with surround screens, something on an adjustable swing arm in 3x1 portait should be great.

I really want to see something like this pulled off, but damn it would be a lot of work.

Good Luck thumb.gif

This project will be cool to watch. Are you planning on water cooling or air cooling for CPU and GPU? If water cooling, then the air flow isn't quite as important. I would also take and find a removable motherboard tray to mount the motherboard to and create a bracket to support heavy components, but you honestly can do anything. The sky is the limit. You can find a sideways hinge to make the boom arm and custom build your own arms from wood, cushioning, and whatever covering you want for the arm. I would mount two 240mm fans on each end and that should give you galeforce air flow. biggrin.gif You have a massive number of possibilities.

I'm probably going to go with air cooling. I'm not familiar with water cooling, so I guess I don't want to risk ruining a project on something I don't know. I can have the entirety of the underside of the chair to have the air flow taken care of, so I think I'll just use that.

I want to use a heavy duty tray, so I can have the best equipment I can shove into the thing fit, without things overheating. I can however custom craft the arms of my chair.

Kind of hard for the community to post ideas without pics of the chair. Although, in my mind I kind of envision building something like a sim racing cockpit out of aluminum extrusions.
