[Mod/Build Thread - August 2013 MOTM Winner] C70 Master Mavis (First time modder) - Page 3

Well I finally got paid so I bought a few things...and then a few more things that I really shouldn't have. If you haven't figured it out yet I've decided to turn this mod/upgrade into pretty much a brand new build. The only carry over will be the processor and that will be replaced later on down the line. I have decided to get the ASRock Z77 OC Formula for a few reasons; One of those reason is just that it looks sooo good and yellow is the name of the game for me. And the other reason is you just get so many features that I would have to pay at least 100 bucks more to get from ASUS. But a small problem has arisen in the form of the mosfet cooler and its mini fan and I know that will be an incredibly loud fan and I'm going for a quiet system. Solution? You'll see.

I'll start the viewing off with my favorite thing that I bought (even though I didn't really have the money for it)

That's right. I went with the MIPS block for the Z77 OC Formula

But why would I just cool the mosfets? I think the Chipset needs some love too.

I also chose to go the extensions route as I don't want to fully sleeve the PSU until later on down the line when I have some serious time to put into it. So I went with Bitfenix Alchemy cables and they look fantastic.

Also put in an order with Lutro0 and picked up the paracord threader along with some black paracord and the flush cutters.

Can't say enough good things about his products. I just wish his ATX pin removal tool had been in stock :/

My assortment of fittings.

And last but not least my attempt at sleeving today. My fingers are in serious pain but I think it looks pretty good for my first try.

Looks like I'm going to be on the Ramen diet for the foreseeable future thanks to my over zealousness, but I know it will be worth it. That's it for today but I should have some updates on the front panel soon. Byyyyeeeee!

Thanks man! I've been following your G5 build for quite sometime now (from the shadows) and it is looking prime.

I just want to start off this post thanking all of you guys that have been nothing but encouraging to me - really it means sooooo much to me. I'm so glad I found OCN and this great group of people. That's enough of that, on to progress!

UPDATE!

Quite a few changes have occurred since my last post. So I will just start with what happened. My original plan was to use the XSPC dual bay res and then have my fan controller above that. That in itself would not have been an issue except for the fact that I really wanted to have a fill port in the top of the case that routed tubing down to the res (because I hear this is one of the biggest gripes people have with a bay res). But sadly once my fittings arrived I realized that would not work even in the slightest because the molex power connector on the fan controller was DIRECTLY above the fill port on top of the bay res so once I put the adapter on the top to convert it to G 1/4 it was already hitting the connector. This really got me discouraged mostly because I had really wanted to do this whole fill port idea, but then it hit me. I essentially have 4 bays, just the top bay had my front I/O so a plan started to form and you will see it evolve as the pictures of this update progress.

As you can see - where the top I/O panel is, is now taped off.

And now it's gone! This was before cleaning up the cut.

Now it's time to relocate the front I/O panel, so I first started out by cutting out the parts I needed from the original panel.

Now how am I going to actually use those pieces without the I/O assembly itself? See for yourself.

Cutout the only two parts of the I/O panel that I really wanted to keep.

Here is the mock-up of where it is being relocated.

Not super happy with the cuts but I cleaned them up since then and they do look better.

Also finally got around to installing my modders mesh.

Modders mesh Plast-dipped and my new front panel that I cut out of smoked acrylic this time.

Finally got around to picking up my 3/4 bit for my fill-port and here it is installed. This was also before cleaning up those cuts. This part will also be painted once it's completed.

Just after overcoming that last hurdle a new one appeared in the form of my 240 Monsta rad. When I measured the rad for fitting in the front I completely forgot to account for the bottom port. I honestly forgot it was even there. So when I realized that and installed one it of course made it so that the rad would not line up with my holes anymore...But I think I figured out a pretty sweet solution. I wish I would have been a little more accurate with my hole but no one will be able to see it, so no biggy.

Yup! A drain port! I was pretty proud of myself haha.

That's all for updates this time round. See you guys in the next one. Byyyyyyyeeeeeeeee!

Thanks! I can't take complete credit for it though. I got the inspiration from BNEGs C70 build.

I don't know how many people actually read this thing but I was wondering if I could get some opinions on whether or not I should delid. I've watched a few videos about using a vice to do it. I'm just nervous, I mean it's the CPU haha. So if anyone has any input on that, it would be greatly appreciated.

On a side note, about a week from tomorrow I should be able to make some pretty big purchases, so stay tuned!

It's all based on temps and your overclock. I have an i7 3770k but I haven't delidded it yet, haven't overclocked it either redface.gif if you feel that temps are limiting your overclock, then you should look into delidding your processor. The vice grip method is MUCH safer than using a razor blade.

Gotcha, I'm currently at a 4.4GHz OC on my 3570k but when I tried to bump it up to 4.5 the computer wouldn't even boot. So I don't know if I have a dud of a chip or (the more likely IMO) it's this board. Because this Extreme4 has given me nothing but problems from day one. I guess I'll get the new system built and if it turns out that it was the board and temps are hindering performance then I'll delid. Thanks for your help!
